Course Description
Supervised School Observation in Special Education is a
practical course designed to orientate students with the knowledge and
requirements necessary to teach according to the diverse needs of learners with
special needs. In this course, students will get exposure to unique educational
strategies, techniques, and best practices for the students with varied
disabilities. The intricacy of the unique special education needs of the children
will be understood by the prospective teachers/students after observing classes
of children of varied disabilities i.e. intellectual disability, hearing impairment,
visual impairment etc. for the period of one week. The students will observe the
children with special needs in different school settings. One week is allocated
for each type of disability/specialization area. Continuous one-week
observation for each disability type is mandatory for the students. Students will
observe, write and reflect on prescribed Performa about the mentioned areas for
each type of disability/specialization area. The course will help the prospective
teacher to decide upon the area of specialization in their forthcoming semester.
The following are the key mandatory/compulsory components of this course:
1. Workshop of 3 days (20 marks)
2. Observation visits of 8 weeks (1 week for each disability type)
3. Sixteen observation Reports (2 for each disability/specialization area).
Details are as follows:
i. Two observation reports for children with intellectual disability
ii. Two observation reports for children with hearing impairment
iii. Two observation reports for children with visual impairment
iv. Two observation reports for children with physical and health
impairment
v. Two observation reports for children with autism spectrum disorder
vi. Two observation reports for children with learning disability
vii. Two observation reports for children enrolled in schools for slow
learners
viii. Two observation reports for children with any kind of special needs
sitting in an inclusive education setup.
6
Course Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course, students be able to:
• Explain the diverse range of disabilities present in the classroom, including but
not limited to visual impairments, hearing impairments, health impairments,
intellectual disabilities, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), learning disabilities etc.
• Attain practical experience in observing and documenting the behaviors,
interactions, and learning experiences of students with special needs within
inclusive educational environments.
• Identify the unique learning and behavioral needs associated with different
types of disabilities and recognize how these needs may manifest in classroom
settings.
• Develop skills in employing various observation techniques and tools to
accurately assess the strengths, challenges, and progress of students with
disabilities.
• Explore effective strategies for fostering an inclusive classroom environment
that supports the participation, engagement, and academic success of students
with diverse learning needs.
• Analyze the roles and responsibilities of educators, support staff, and other
stakeholders in providing appropriate accommodations, modifications, and
support services to students with special needs.
• Arrive at an informed decision about the selection of area of specialization in
the forthcoming semester.
7
Observation Methods
Observation involves directly and systematically witnessing and recording
measurable behaviors, actions, and responses in natural or contrived settings
without attempting to intervene or manipulate what is being observed. Observations
can also be either overt/disclosed (the participants know they are being studied) or
covert/undisclosed (the researcher keeps their real identity a secret from the
research subjects, acting as a genuine member of the group). There are different
methods to carry out observations as discussed below:
Naturalistic Observation: Naturalistic observation is a research method in which
the researcher studies behavior in its natural setting without intervention or
manipulation. It involves observing and recording behavior as it naturally occurs,
providing insights into real-life behaviors and interactions in their natural context.
Participant Observation: In this observation, the observer is a part of the
phenomenon or group which was observed, and he acts as both an observer and a
participant. Participant observation is a variant of the above (natural observations)
but here, the observer becomes part of the group they are studying to get a deeper
insight into their lives. While conducting participant observation, the observer
should focus on capturing an accurate and authentic account of the community's
way of life. This means that the observer must avoid influencing the behaviour of
anyone in the group.
Non-participant Observation: In this method, the observer stands apart and does
not participate in the phenomenon observed. Naturally, there is no emotional
involvement on the part of the observer. This method calls for skill in recording
observations in an un-noticed manner.
Direct Observation: This means observation of an event personally by the
observer when it takes place. This method is flexible and allows the observer to see
8
and record indirect aspects of events and behaviours as they occur. The observer is
also free to shift places and change the focus of the observation.
Indirect Observation: This does not involve the physical presence of the observer,
and the recording is done by mechanical, photographic or electronic devices.
Controlled Observation: Controlled observation is carried out either in the
laboratory or in the field. It is typified by clear and explicit decisions on what, how,
and when to observe. It is primarily used for inferring causality and testing casual
hypotheses.
6. Uncontrolled Observation: This does not involve extrinsic and intrinsic
variables. It is primarily used for descriptive research. Participant observation is a
typical uncontrolled one.
9
A Brief Background Of Teacher Observation
Teacher observation describes the practice of sitting in on another teacher’s class
to observe, learn and reflect. Teacher observation is a formal or
informal observation of teaching while it’s taking place in a classroom or other
learning environment. They’re often used to provide teachers with constructive
critical feedback about classroom management and instructional techniques.
Various aspects of the class can be examined, such as routines, use of time,
schedule, participation, teaching strategies, management strategies, learner interest,
and much more. In many cases, observation notes are recorded using common
templates or guidelines that describe what observers should be looking for or what
the observed teacher would like feedback on. While it's often new or specialist
teachers who go through classroom observation, everyone can benefit from the
process if it's done correctly. Teaching observation can be a few minutes or a few
days long. There's no set duration, and it all depends on the goal of each
observation. Regardless of goals and duration, each classroom observation is meant
to be done with professionalism, integrity and courtesy. It should have an agreed-
upon protocol, and it should be done objectively and be confidential.
One of the main challenges for observation is knowing what to look for. We’ve put
together a helpful checklist that you can work through to help get you started.
During a lesson observation, the observer is looking for evidence of the following:
• Resources: Are the resources easily accessible for the children and the teacher?
Are the most suitable resources being used?
• Pitch of the Lesson: Is the content of the lesson appropriate for the year group
and range of abilities? In the case of inclusive classrooms, is there enough
10
challenge for the more able children? Are the less able children getting the
support they need?
• Awareness of Needs: Does the teacher move the learning on when necessary?
Are they aware of any progress being made? Is the teacher aware of struggling
children?
• Plenary: Does the lesson have an effective conclusion? Does the plenary
provide a summary of the lesson or lead into the next lesson? Can the children
demonstrate their learning?
• There is also room for general comments that arise during the lesson.
11
Classroom Observation Guidelines
How should You approach a teacher for observation?
Remember that doing observations can be a sensitive topic for most teachers.
Allowing someone to observe your practice can be daunting for any teacher
(regardless of their experience), as teachers give their heart and soul to the job and
it’s probably something they take great pride in. Here are three tips to keep in mind
for anyone observing a teacher:
• Give positive feedback to the teacher! It’s always rewarding to hear something
positive about your own teaching.
• If you are asked for any constructive feedback, try to do so in a supportive
manner.
• Always make sure you thank them for allowing you to observe them.
To observe the expert teacher of a specific disability type, the student will visit the
nearby public/private school having enrollment of children with special needs. The
list of approved schools for school observation in their area/region can be obtained
from their regional study centers. The students will get permission from the school
authorities to observe the teaching practices going on in classrooms. The students
will observe the assessment, intervention/teaching and evaluation practices of any
experienced teacher/educator working in the schools for the below-mentioned areas
of specialization/Disability for one week/five days. Learners/prospective teachers
will carry out the observations of experts’ teaching practices for 8 weeks as per the
following schedule:
12
• Five observations of special educators working in schools of children with
intellectual disability
• Five observations of special educators working in schools of children with
hearing impairment
• Five observations of special educators working in schools of children with
visual impairment
• Five observations of special educators working in schools of children with
physical and health impairment
• Five observations of special educators working in schools of children with
autism spectrum disorder
• Five observations of a special educator working in the school of slow learners
• Five observations of special educators working in schools of children with
learning disability
• Five observations of a special educator working in an Inclusive classroom
setup.
Students will observe the class teacher for at least one hour daily. Students are
suggested to take notes of their classroom observations daily. These notes will
help them to write observation reports in the last two days of the observation
week. Students will fill out the following table number 1 to maintain the record of
their observation visits made to schools. The observed teacher at the respective
school will sign in Table 1 at the end of each class observed.
13
Record of School Observation Visits
Each student is required to maintain a record of the school visits and help the
evaluator to ensure the observations of class teachers’ classroom practices.

signature at the end of one hour of observation each day. The evaluator will mark
the observation reports only after confirming the visits made by students, duly
signed by teachers observed.
15
Classroom Observation Report Guidelines
Students are required to carry out non-participatory observations of the class
teacher. Students are suggested to take notes of their classroom observations on the
first three days. These notes will help them to write observation reports in the last
2 days of the week. Students will write their observations on this manual during the
observation of the class teacher on the fourth and fifth day of observation week of
the respective disability/category. The observation report will contain the following
(1-9) observation areas for which students will write comments during observations
in the classroom.
16
Scoring Guide for Observation Reports
i. The students are required to attend the workshop having marks weightage of
20 marks. These marks will be entered in their result automatically as per their
attendance record from LMS.
ii. The allocated marks for each observation report are five. The student will
prepare two observation reports for each specialization/disability type. In
total, there are 16 observation reports carrying a score weightage of 80 marks.
The student will write the details in the below mentioned table for marking
purpose. The evaluator/examiner may use the following table for ease of
scoring:
