What’s In

In Module 2, you have enhanced your skills and understanding in

defining, identifying the types and parts of computers. As we all know that a
computer system comprises of two main components, the hardware or
physical part which you have previously learned and software which consists
of the non – physical or set of instructions.
In this module you will learn about the types of computer software and
how the types of computer software are associated with each other.

What’s New

We all react differently according to situations? Have you ever thought

how it becomes possible? Let us understand this with the help of an example.
What happens when you ask a question and you know the answer? You
will simply raise your hand. Is it correct? What prompts you to raise your
hand? It is the brain that gives you instruction to react this manner? Similarly,
the computer gets all the instructions from the software to perform various
tasks.
Everyday, we come across with different types of computer software
that help us with our tasks and increase our efficiency. From MS Windows
that greets us when we switch on the system to the web browser that is used
to surf the internet or the games that we play on our computer to the calorie
burn counter on our smartphone, are all examples of software.
In this world of technology, we even come across with various software
development trends that help our business to grow, we are surrounded by all
these softwares which are determined to make our lives easier. Computer
software is the soul of computer. Without computer software, computers
cannot exist.
What is It

By definition, a Software (also abbreviated as an SW or S/W) is a

collection of data, programs, procedures, instructions, and documentation
that perform various predefined tasks on a computer system. They enable
users to interact with the computer.
In the field of software engineering and computer science, the software
is nothing but information processed by a computer system and programs.
The software includes libraries, programs, and corresponding non-executable
data, such as digital media and online documentation. Computer hardware
and software need each other and neither one of them can be convincingly
used on its own. Without software, computers would be of no use. For
instance, without the help of your web browser software, you will not be able
to surf the internet. Similarly, without an operating system, no application
can run on your computer.
Today there are abundant high-end technologies and software
accessible to us that outline the way we lead our lives and house our
continuously changing and increasing needs. The endless number of software
types can be overwhelming for anybody, especially when one does not
understand the various types of software and their users thoroughly.
Computer software or software is a general term that describes
computer programs. Related terms such as software programs, applications,
scripts, and instruction sets all fall under the category of computer software.
Therefore, installing new programs or applications on your computer is
synonymous with installing new software on your computer. A computer
software is essential because it manages the computer's memory and
processes, as well as all of its software and hardware. It also allows you to
communicate with the computer without knowing how to speak the
computer's language.
Good job! Before reading the next page , you are task to answer the
succeding activity about the computer software.
Activity 1.1: The Fact or Bluff of the Computer Software

Objectives: Define and describe the computer software.

Directions: Write FACT if the statement is correct and BLUFF if the

statement is incorrect. Write the answer on a separate sheet of paper.

1. A computer software requires a set of instructions that tells the

computer what is to be done with the input data.
2. Computer software is a part of a computer system that consists of
encoded information or computer instructions.
3. The term computer software is synonymous with computer data.
4. A computer software is anything that can be stored electronically.
5. The computer software is used to contrast with computer hardware.
6. Computer softwares are commonly known as programs or
applications.
7. The computer software comprises the entire set of programs,
procedures, and routines associated with the operation of a
computer
system.
8. A computer software provides the means of accomplishing many
different tasks with the same basic hardware.
9. A computer software consists of lines of text written by computer
programmers that have been compiled into a computer program.
10. A computer software programs are stored as complex data that is
copied to a computer's hard drive, when it is installed.

Types of Computer Software

Systems Software

Systems software aids the user and the hardware to function and
interact with each other. Basically, it is a software to manage computer
hardware behavior so as to provide basic functionalities that are required by
the user. In simple words, we can say that system software is an
intermediator or a middle layer between the user and the hardware. These
computer software sanction a platform or environment for the other software
to work in. This is the reason why systems software is very important in
managing the entire computer system. When you first turn on the computer,
it is the systems software that gets initialized and gets loaded in the memory
of the system. The systems software runs in the background and is not used
by the end-users. This is the reason why systems software is also known as
‘low-level software’. The systems software includes operating systems, device
drivers and diagnostic tools. Systems software is almost always pre-installed
on your computer.

Some common systems software examples are:

A. Operating System

It is the most prominent example of systems software. It is a collection

of software that handles resources and provides general services for the
other applications that run over them. Although each operating system is
different, most of them provide a Graphical User Interface through which a
user can manage the files and folders and perform other tasks. Every device,
whether a desktop, laptop or mobile phone requires an operating system to
provide the basic functionality to it. As an OS essentially determines how a
user interacts with the system, therefore many users prefer to use one
specific OS for their device. There are various types of operating system such
as real-time, embedded, distributed, multiuser, single-user, internet, mobile,
and many more. It is important to consider the hardware specifications
before choosing an operating system.
The computer's operating system (OS) manages all of the software and
hardware on the computer. Most of the time, there are several different
computer programs running at the same time, and they all need to access
your computer's central processing unit , memory, and storage. The
operating system coordinates all of this to make sure each program gets
what it needs.
Some examples of Operating systems given below: Android, CentOS, iOS,
Linux, Mac OS, MS Windows,Ubuntu,Unix. See the images below.

B. Device Drivers

A device driver is a special kind of software program that controls a

specific hardware device attached to a computer. Device drivers are essential
for
a computer to work properly. These programs may be compact, but
they provide the all-important means for a computer to interact with
hardware, for everything from mouse, keyboard and display (user
input/output) to working with networks, storage and graphics.
Device drivers generally run at a high level of privilege within the
operating system runtime environment. Some device drivers, in fact, may be
linked directly to the operating system kernel, a portion of an OS such as
Windows, Linux or Mac OS, that remains memory resident and handles
execution for all other code, including device drivers. Device drivers relay
requests for device access and actions from the operating system and its
active applications to their respective hardware devices. They also deliver
outputs or status/messages from the hardware devices to the operating
system.
Further, there are two types of device drivers: Kernel Device Drivers
and User Device Driver. Some examples of device drivers are: BIOS Driver,
Display Drivers, Motherboard Drivers, Printer Drivers, ROM Drivers Sound
card Drivers, USB Drivers,VGA Drivers and Virtual Device Drivers.

C. Firmware

Firmware is the permanent software that is embedded into a read-only

memory. It is a set of instructions permanently stored on a hardware device.
It provides essential information regarding how the device interacts with
other hardware. Firmware can be considered as ‘semi-permanent’ as it
remains permanent unless it is updated using a firmware updater.
Firmware is a software program or set of instructions programmed on a
hardware device. It provides the necessary instructions for how the device
communicates with the other computer hardware. Firmware is typically
stored in the flash ROM of a hardware device.
Some examples of firmware are: BIOS, Computer Peripherals,
Consumer Applications, Embedded Systems and UEFI.

D. Programming Language Translators

A program written in high-level language by the programmer is called
as source code. To convert the source code into machine code, translators
are needed. A translator takes a program written in source language as input
and converts it into a program in target language as output. It also detects
and reports the error during translation by providing diagnostic messages
wherever the programmer violates specification of the high-level language
program.

These are mediator programs on which software programs rely to

translate high-level language code to simpler machine-level code.
Some examples of programming languages that use interpreters are
Python, Ruby, Perl and PHP.
Besides simplifying the code, the translators also do the following :
1. assign data storage;
2. enlist source code as well as program details;
3. offer diagnostic reports; and
4. rectify system errors during the runtime.

E. Utility

Utility software is designed to aid in analyzing, optimizing, configuring

and maintaining a computer system. It supports the computer infrastructure.
This software focuses on how an OS functions and then accordingly it decides
its trajectory to smoothen the functioning of the system. Softwares like
antiviruses, disk cleanup & management tools, compression tools, and
defragmenters are all utility tools.
Utility software, along with operating system software, is a type of
system software, distinguishing it from application software.
Some examples of utility tools are: Avast Antivirus, Directory Opus,
McAfee Antivirus, Piriform Ccleaner, Razer Cortex, Windows File Explorer,
WinRAR and WinZip. See the images below.

What is It

Application Software is known as end-user programs or productivity

programs are software that helps the user in completing tasks such as doing
online research, jotting down notes, setting an alarm, designing graphics,
keeping an account log, doing calculations or even playing games. Unlike
system software, they are used by the end-user and are specific in their
functionality or tasks and do the job that they are designed to do. For
example, a browser is an application designed specifically for browsing the
internet or MS Powerpoint is an application used specifically for making
presentations.
Application Software or simply applications can also be referred to as
non-essential software as their requirement is highly subjective and their
absence does not affect the functioning of the system. All the applications
that we see on our mobile phones are also examples of Application Software.
This software includes executable files and data files such as Installer
program, Uninstaller program, Main executable file, Support modules and
Data modules.
Application software, however, is the most important type for computer
users because it is used to achieve many of the tasks that make us turn to
our computers in the first place, such as word processing, web browsing and
data crunching.
Application software applies the power of system software. This is why
when downloading software, you have to find a version that is compatible
with your running operating system. In essence, that software draws on the
OS to create a Word document, spreadsheet or PowerPoint presentation.
