COURSE OBJECTIVES:
1. To gain knowledge of fundamentals of image processing.
2. To gain knowledge in image enhancement, restoration, compression, segmentation.
3. To determine the suitable Image enhancement, restoration and Segmentation techniques for a given
application.
4. To determine the suitable image compression algorithms.
COURSE OUTCOMES:
After successful completion of the course, the students are able to
1. Understand image processing fundamentals.
2. Understand image enhancement, restoration, compression, segmentation, representation and
descriptors.
3. Apply filtering techniques for enhancement, restoration and segmentation on images.
4. Apply compression algorithms on images.
INTRODUCTION: Origin of Digital Image Processing, Fields that use Digital Image Processing,
Fundamental Steps in Digital Image Processing, Components of an Image Processing System.
IMAGE RESTORATION: Noise Models, Restoration in the Presence of Noise only-Spatial Filtering,
Periodic Noise Reduction by Frequency Domain Filtering; Linear, Position - Invariant Degradations,
Inverse Filtering, Wiener Filtering.
IMAGE SEGMENTATION: Point, Line and Edge Detection, Thresholding-Basic Global Thresholding,
Optimum Global Thresholding, Region Based Segmentation.
