Fourier Transform 1

The document provides an overview of the Fourier Transform, including its integral representation, cosine, and sine transforms. It discusses the Fourier Integral Theorem, which allows for the representation of piecewise continuous functions as Fourier integrals, and provides examples illustrating the application of these concepts. Additionally, it includes specific cases for even and odd functions, along with practical examples to demonstrate the calculations involved.

Fourier Integral Theorem
A periodic function f (x) defined in a finite interval (−L, L) can be expressed in
Fourier series. By extending this concept, non-periodic functions defined in −∞ <
x < ∞ (for all x) can be expressed as a Fourier integral, since in practice periodic
functions are fairly rare.

Theorem (Fourier Integral Theorem)

A function f (x), which is piecewise continuous in every finite interval and is abso-
lutely integrable on the x-axis, can be represented by a Fourier integral
Z ∞
f (x) = [A(w ) cos wx + B(w ) sin wx]dw (1)

which is valid at all points of continuity. At a point of discontinuity x0 , the Fourier

integral = 12 [f (x0 − 0) + f (x0 + 0)] i.e., average of the left and right hand limits of
f (x) at x0 , where

Note
Substituting the values of A(w ) and B(w ) in (1) yields

Fourier transform

The Fourier transform of the function f (x) is denoted by fˆ(w ) or F (f )

and is defined as
Z∞
1
fˆ(w ) = F (f ) = √ f (x)e −iwx dx.

−∞

and
Z∞
1
f (x) = √ fˆ(w )e iwx dw .

−∞

is called inverse Fourier transform.

Dr. Juhi Kesarwani & Dr. Ashish Kesarwany (VITB) Fourier Transform February 11, 2025 46 / 51
Existence of the Fourier Transform

If f (x) is absolutely integrable on the x-axis and piecewise continuous on

every finite interval, then the Fourier transform of f (x) given by
Z∞
1
F (f ) = √ f (x)e −iwx dx

−∞

exists.

Solution
By definition, we get

Z 1

Solution cont. . .
Now, by inverse Fourier transform, we have
Z ∞
1 ∞ sin w iwx
Z
1
f (x) = √ F (f )e iwx
dw = e dw
2π −∞ π −∞ w
Putting x = 0 yields
Z ∞ Z∞
1 sin w 2 sin w
f (0) = dw = dw
π −∞ w π w
0
2 ∞ sin w
Z
=⇒ 1 = dw
π 0 w
Z ∞
π sin w
=⇒ = dw
2 0 w
Thus

Z ∞

dx =
