Internship Report: Sales Analysis Using Power BI

1. Introduction
The goal of this project was to analyze sales data for a company to extract actionable
insights regarding sales performance, seasonal trends, customer segments, and product
performance. Using Microsoft Power BI, interactive dashboards and visualizations were
created to support strategic decision-making.

2. Data Overview
The dataset contained fields such as:
- Order Quantity
- Sales
- Profit
- Year
- Ship Mode
- Customer Segment

The dataset covered sales records from 2010 to 2012, including thousands of orders across
different customer categories and regions.

3. Key Metrics
- Total Orders (Quantity): 2,540 units
- Total Profit: ₹12,210
- Total Supplies (Orders Processed): 2.54K

4. Trend Analysis
Sales by Year:
- 2010: ₹~5K
- 2011: ₹~10K
- 2012: ₹~18K

This upward trajectory demonstrates consistent year-on-year growth, suggesting

increasing customer demand or improved sales efforts.

5. Customer Segment Performance

Order Quantity by Segment:
- Corporate: 41.15% (1.04K)
- Home Office: 28.77% (0.73K)
- Consumer: 21.56% (0.55K)
- Small Business: 8.51% (0.22K)

Corporate clients contributed the largest share of orders, indicating a strong B2B
performance. Small Businesses had the least engagement, signaling a potential area for
growth or reevaluation.

6. Shipment Mode Insights

Customer Segment by Ship Mode:
- Majority used Express Air and Regular Air Delivery
- Truck was used the least

Air-based shipping indicates a preference for faster delivery, likely valued by Corporate and
Home Office segments.

7. Seasonal & Temporal Patterns

From the year-wise sales graph:
- Sales significantly increase year by year, hinting at a growing market or effective
marketing.
- Further breakdown by months (not shown but can be added) could reveal seasonal
demand spikes, useful for inventory planning.

8. Recommendations
1. Invest more in the Corporate segment through loyalty programs or bulk discounts.
2. Evaluate outreach to Small Businesses — investigate whether pricing, product fit, or
marketing is limiting growth.
3. Enhance air logistics, as it's the preferred shipping method.
4. Continue expanding data over future years to identify more long-term trends.

9. Tools Used
- Microsoft Power BI: Data modeling, dashboard creation, visualization
- Excel: Initial data preparation

10. Conclusion
This sales analysis project enabled identification of key trends and customer behavior. By
leveraging Power BI, the organization can make data-driven decisions to optimize
marketing, sales strategies, and operational planning. The experience also strengthened my
skills in business intelligence and real-world data analytics.
