HPC Name:

Review of Important Algebra 2 Topics

Properties of Exponents. Refer to Appendix A2 pages A14 – A16

1. Evaluate:
(a) (−2)! (b) −2!

(c) 2!! (d) 2 ∙ 2!!

2. Simplify:
25a 8b 4 (−2xy −2 )−2
(a) (b)
−5a 2b12 (−2x −2 y)−3

Interval Notation. Refer to Appendix A, pages A3 – A5.

3. Express each interval in set-builder notation:

(a) [-2, 5) (b) (−∞,5]

4. Write, using interval notation:

(a) −8 ≥ x > −12 (b) All real numbers

Basics of Functions. Refer to Section 1.4 (pages 39 – 53).

5. Determine whether y is a function of x. If yes, state the domain and range of the function.
(a) {(2, -1), (3, 2), (-1, 3)} (b) {(2, -1), (2, 4), (5, 6)}

6. Determine whether y is a function of x.

(a) x 2 − y = 1 (b) x 2 + y 2 = 1
(c) (d)

Increasing/Decreasing Functions & Relative Max/Min. Refer to section 1.5 (pages 54-60).

7. Given the function f(x) graphed below,

(a) State the domain and range of f.

(b) State the interval(s) on which f is increasing. Use interval notation.

(c) Determine the relative maximum(s) and minimum(s) of f.

Graphs of Common Functions. Refer to Section 1.6 (pages 66 – 70).

Transformations of Functions. Refer to Section 1.7 (pages 73 – 77).

8. In each case describe the transformation(s) that occurred from the parent function f to the transformed
function g. Check your answers by graphing on your calculator or Desmos.

Example 1: f (x) = x 2 g(x) = (x + 3)2 . g is f translated (shifted) 3 units to the left.

Example 2: f (x) = x g(x) = 2 −x . g is f reflected over the y-axis (horizontal reflection) and
stretched vertically by a factor of 2.

(a) f (x) = x 2 , g(x) = (x − 1)2 + 5 (b) f (x) = x 2 , g(x) = 3x 2 − 8

⎛1 ⎞
(c) f (x) = 3 x , g(x) = 3 −x + 8 (d) f (x) , g(x) = f ⎜ x ⎟
⎝2 ⎠
9. Use the graph of the parent function y = f (x) to graph the indicated function, g.

f(x) (a) g(x) = f (x + 2) − 1

(b) g(x) = 2 f (−x) (c) g(x) = f (2x)

Composite Functions. Refer to Section 1.8 (pages 83 – 87).

Inverse Functions. Refer to Section 1.9 (pages 92 – 97).

10. Use the fact that if f and g are inverses, then f ( g(x)) = g ( f (x)) = x , to prove that f and g are inverses of
each other.
x3 − 4
f ( x ) = 3 2x + 4 g( x) =

Part 1: Show f ( g(x)) = x Part 2: Show g ( f (x)) = x
x+3
11. Given the one-to-one function f ( x ) = , determine an equation for the inverse function f −1 (x) .
x−4

12. For each of the following graphs, identify the functions which are on-go-one (have inverses that are also
themselves functions). Next, on the same set of axes, graph the inverse function of each function.

(a) Is the function 1-1? (b) Is the function 1-1?
