EEE 767 Assignment and Tutorials 2425

The document outlines a tutorial and assignment for EEE 767, consisting of seven questions related to electromagnetic radiation, modulation, and signal processing. It specifically requests answers to questions 3, 4, 5, and 6 to be submitted to Dr. S. I. Ojo. The questions cover topics such as frequency ranges for local oscillators, modulation index calculations, Nyquist sampling rates, and maximum deviation in FM systems.

EEE 767 TUTORIALS AND ASSISGNMENT

Q1 A well-known theory of electromagnetic radiation of an electrical energy stipulates that for efficient
radiation, an antenna must have a dimension of about half the wavelength of the signal to be transmitted.
Calculate the size of an antenna required for an audio signal of 4.5 kHz frequency and explain what
should be done to achieve an antenna of practical size.

Q2 Find the ratio of the total side-band power in the modulation to the total power for the modulating
signal with frequency
f m Hz. If 80% modulation is used in a AM system

Q3 If frequency of an AM broadcast ranges between 450 kHz and 1550 kHz, with an IF of 455 kHz,
determine the frequency range over which the local oscillator (LO) can be tuned, when the LO frequency
is higher than the signal frequency

Q4 A certain transmitter radiates 15 kW with carrier unmodulated and 18 kW when the carrier is
simultaneously modulated. Calculate the modulation index and the total radiated power if another
sinewave corresponding to 65% modulation is transmitted simultaneously.

Q5 Determine the Nyquist sampling rate and Nyquist sampling interval for the signal
w (t )=8 cos42 πt+16 sin 58 πt−cos280 πt .

Q6 When the modulating frequency in an FM system is 350 Hz and the modulating voltage is 28 V, the
modulation index is 550%. Calculate the maximum deviation and the modulation index when modulating
frequency is reduced to 150 Hz and the modulating voltage is simultaneously raised to 33.2 V.

Q7 An AM broadcast station transmits a total power of 7 Kw when the carrier is modulated by a

sinusoidal signal with a modulation index of 0.8202. Compute the carrier power, the transmission
efficiency, and the peak amplitude of the carrier assuming the antenna to be represented by (60+j0) Ω

Kindly answer Questions 3, 4, 5, and 6, and submit to Dr. S. I. Ojo
