1. Introduction
Projectile motion is a type of motion experienced by an object that is launched
into the air and is influenced only by gravity and its initial velocity. This form
of motion is common in our daily lives, from sports activities like throwing a
ball to the more sophisticated workings of fireworks. In physics, understanding
the principles of projectile motion helps in predicting the trajectory and
behaviour of objects under the influence of gravity. This project explores the
fundamental aspects of projectile motion, including its definition, equations,
types, and real-world applications.
• Gravity: A constant force that pulls the object towards the Earth’s centre.
• Air Resistance: For simplicity in basic physics problems, air resistance is
often neglected; however, in real-world scenarios, it can significantly
impact the motion.
3. Components of Projectile Motion
Projectile motion can be analysed by splitting it into two independent
components:
𝑣02 sin(2𝜃)
𝑅=
𝑔
The maximum height is the peak point of the projectile's trajectory. At this
point, the vertical component of the velocity becomes zero. The formula for
Maximum Height is:
The time of flight is the total time the projectile remains in the air. To derive the
time of flight for a projectile launched from the ground, we use:
2𝑣0 sin(𝜃)
𝑇=
𝑔
d. Derivations
Equations:
Equations:
𝑣02 sin(2𝜃)
• Horizontal Range: 𝑅 =
𝑔
2𝑣0 sin(𝜃)
• Time of Flight: 𝑇 =
𝑔
𝑣02 sin2 (𝜃)
• Maximum Height: 𝐻 =
2𝑔
This is when a projectile is launched from a certain height above the ground,
and the object has an initial vertical velocity.
Equations:
• Horizontal Range: Derived from the time of flight and initial horizontal
velocity.
• Sports: Calculating the optimal angle and speed for throwing a ball, kicking a
football, or shooting an arrow.
