mangrove swamps (S6LT-lli-j-6)

Day 1
Ways in Protecting and Conserving Tropical Rainforests,
Coral Reefs, and Mangrove Swamps

Objective:
 Enumerate ways on how to protect and conserve tropical rainforests, coral reef, and
mangrove swamps

Brief Introduction
Forest, coral reefs, and mangrove swamps need to be protected and conserve. They
provide resources and needs for people. Our role is to practice sustainability in conserving
and protecting them.

Let’s Recall (Review)

Classify the following animals by writing V for vertebrates and IV for
invertebrates. Write the answer on your sheet.
1. Worm 6. Ant
2. Bat 7. Dog
3. Spider 8. Jellyfish
4. Goldfish 9. Elephant
5. Star fish 10. Snail

Let’s Understand (Study the Concept)

Protecting the forests is also a way of protecting our wildlife.

WAYS OF PROTECTING AND CONSERVING TROPICAL RAINFORESTS,

CORAL REEF, AND MANGROVE SWAMPS

1. Building a man- made fish sanctuary will restore the marine life ecosystem.
2. Reforestation Program or replanting a forest
3. Mangrove rehabilitation includes clean-up, replanting, control of pollution and
seagrass transplantation.
4. Ecosystem approach or wildlife conservation

[1]
5. Waste control programs reusing, recycling, and safety collecting and treating waste
is a big help.
6. Advocacy campaigns to fight deforestation.
7. Strict implementation of laws on environmental protection (P.D. no. 1152), “The
Philippine Environmental Code” and (P.D. 139), “The Forest Reform Code”.

Let’s Apply
Put a check (/) if the statement shows protecting and conserving rainforest and
cross (x) if it is not.

________1. Planting trees helps prevent soil erosion.

________2. Fight reforestation program.
________3. Conduct overfishing to restore marine life.
________4. Planting mangrove seedlings in the mangrove swamps.
________5. Tracking the number of different organisms in a certain area.

Let’s Analyze
Answer the following questions. Write the answer on your answer sheet.

1. Do you think it is important to protect and conserve our ecosystem?

Justify your answer on how you can help to protect and conserve it.

Day 2-3:
Harmful Effects and Implications to Communities, Environments and Human Beings if
Tropical Rainforests, Coral Reefs, and Mangrove Swamps are not Protected and
Conserved

Objective:
● Discuss the harmful effects and implications to communities, environments, and
human beings if tropical rainforests, coral reefs, and mangrove swamps are not protected and
conserved

Brief Introduction
Each year, rainforest, coral reefs, and mangrove swamps are destroyed for
unsustainable development and activities that bring us threats. But, to stop it you need to
protect and conserve all of these.

[2]
Let’s Recall (Review)
Put a check (/) if the statement shows ways on protecting and conserving
rainforest and cross (x) if it is not.

______1. Building a man- made fish sanctuary will restore the marine life ecosystem.
______2. Reforestation Program or replanting a forest
______3. Mangrove rehabilitation includes clean-up, replanting, and control of
pollution.
______4. Ecosystem approach or wildlife conservation
______5. On -going deforestation.

Let’s Understand (Study the Concept)

Tropical rainforests, coral reefs, and mangrove swamps will bring harmful
effects and implications to communities, environment, and human beings if they will not be
protected and conserved.
The following are the effects and implications to communities, environment,
and human beings of unprotected of Tropical Rainforests:

1. Climate change and loss of biodiversity

2. Soil erosion and flooding in coastal area
3. Water and air pollution
4. Lessen the number of species and loss of habitat
5. Increase of tropical disease
6. Raising sea level
7. Lose the ability to release more carbon dioxide
8. Destruction of homelands
9. Global/local destruction of the ecotourism
10. Destruction on food security, live and livelihoods

Let’s Apply
The following are harmful effects and implications to communities,
environments, and human beings if tropical rainforests, coral reefs, and mangrove swamps
are not protected and conserved. Cross-out (X) the statement that is not included.
_____1. Climate change and loss of biodiversity
_____2. Soil erosion and flooding in coastal area
_____3. Reduce water and air pollution
_____4. Lessen the number of species and loss of habitat
_____5. Decrease tropical disease

[3]
Let’s Analyze
Answer the following questions.

1. Is there an effect and implications to communities, environments, and human

beings if tropical rainforests, coral reefs, and mangrove swamps are not protected
and conserved? ____________________________________________________
2. Choose a one (1) statement below and discuss its effect and implication to the
ecosystem. Write your answer on your answer sheet.
_________________________________________________________________

AA. A. Soil erosion and flooding in coastal area

B. Water and air pollution
C. Lessen the number of species and loss of habitat
D. Lose the ability to release more carbon dioxide
E. Destruction of homelands
F. Destruction on food security, live, and livelihoods

Day 4-5:
Specific Issues Involving Protection and Conservation of Ecosystems that Serve as
Nurseries, Breeding Places and Habitats for Economically Important Plants and
Animals

Objective:
● Discuss specific issues involving protection and conservation of ecosystems that serve
as nurseries, breeding places and habitats for economically important plants and
animals

Brief Introduction
Conservation efforts are critical to protecting biodiversity. But many conservation
interventions have negative social impacts on the people that live close to nature. Such as
human activities that disrupt the natural balance of an ecosystem. These change the original
structure and function of the ecosystem.

Let’s Recall (Review)

Write TRUE if the following statement tells the correct way of protecting the
ecosystem and FALSE if it is wrong. Write your answer on your answer sheet.
1.Building a man- made fish sanctuary will restore the marine life ecosystem.
2. Reforestation program or replanting

[4]
3.Mangrove rehabilitation that includes clean-up, replanting, and control of pollution.
4.Ecosystem approach or wildlife conservation
5.Waste control program reusing, recycling, safety collecting of waste and treating it
properly.

Let’s Understand (Study the Concept)

Loss of biodiversity is increasing in the ecosystems. Many animals and
plants populations have declined in numbers due to human activities. Such activities have a
big impact on ecosystems. If all issues on protection and conservation of nurseries, breeding
places and habitats for economically important plants and animals, the natural ecosystems
can play its crucial role in protecting and conserving them. Protection and conservation of
ecosystems is necessary.
Below are issues involving protection and conservation of ecosystems:
1. Protection of the natural environment and biodiversity.
2. The importance of biodiversity in natural ecosystems
3. Using social media portals in promoting nature conservation.
4. The effectiveness of environmental protection programs in the natural ecosystem.
5. Kaingin system farming method.
6. Industrialization such as building houses, factories, towns, cities, and roads.
7. Use as recreation like, hunting animals, and collecting plants.
8. Habitat degradation and blockage of wildlife corridors.
9. Failure to follow government policies.
10. Illegal resource extraction, wildfires, human population growth

Let’s Apply
Study the pictures below, draw a happy face if it shows issues in protecting
and conserving ecosystems and sad face if it is not.

1. 3.

[5]
2. 4.

5.

Let’s Analyze
Answer the following questions.

What are the activities or programs in your community that help to solve issues in
protecting and conserving the ecosystem? List down at least 3 activities, item no. one (1) is
done for as your guide.

Activities /Program
1.Clean-up drive
2.
