Web vs.

App Development for Quick Internships

For a beginner aiming to land an internship fast, Web Development is often more accessible. There are
vastly more websites (~1.1 billion as of 2024 1 ) than mobile apps, and many companies need simple
websites or web-app features. Indeed lists 100+ remote web developer internships in India 2 . In
contrast, mobile-app internships (Android/iOS) exist but require specialized tools (Xcode, Android SDK)
and stronger language skills (Java/Kotlin/Swift). (By one count there are ~9 million mobile app
developers vs. ~23 million web developers handling ~530 million websites 3 .) Both fields are growing,
but web skills (HTML/CSS/JS and frameworks like React/Node) are a quicker entry point. That said, if you
have a passion for mobile or want to work on apps, you could also learn React Native or Flutter – but for
speedy hiring and more remote roles, web dev is usually the safest bet 2 3 .

Becoming Industry-Ready Beyond Books

• Build Real Projects: Rather than only reading, apply your skills by building simple websites or
apps. Start a portfolio (e.g. a personal blog, to-do list app, or clones of popular sites). Use Git/
GitHub to track your code. Hands-on projects directly prepare you for internship work 4 . For
example, complete a small full-stack project (HTML/CSS/JS + backend like Node.js) and deploy it
(on Netlify, Heroku, etc.).
• Use AI Tools Wisely: Treat ChatGPT/GitHub Copilot as a “coding buddy.” Ask it to explain code,
suggest solutions, or generate boilerplate HTML/JS. It can speed up learning (e.g. debugging
help, code snippets), but verify its output and learn from it – don’t just copy-paste blindly. Over
time, focus on understanding fundamentals so you can improve AI suggestions.
• Learn In-Demand Frameworks: Industry often uses modern stacks (React, Angular/Vue,
Node.js, Express, databases). Take free YouTube courses or guided paths (e.g. freeCodeCamp) to
get hands-on. Quick online courses can help you build “real” apps (e.g. MERN stack) faster than
textbooks.
• Contribute and Network: Join GitHub open-source projects or coding communities (Stack
Overflow, Discord, Meetup groups). Even fixing small bugs in an open-source repo can count as
experience. Participate in beginner-friendly hackathons or coding contests (see below). This not
only sharpens skills but shows initiative to employers.
• Internship Platforms: Follow Internshala, AngelList (Wellfound), and LinkedIn for postings.
Many startups post internship roles there. Also watch company careers pages (Google,
Microsoft, etc.) and join tech newsletters. In short: emphasize “practical skills and
programming knowledge” in your profile 4 . Build a GitHub with code examples, a LinkedIn
profile highlighting your projects, and you’ll stand out more than with certificates alone.

Timeline for Applying

A realistic timeline (with full-time dedication ~20–40 hours/week) is roughly 6–12 months to be ready:
- 1–3 months: Learn the basics – HTML, CSS, JavaScript. Make simple static pages and a couple of tiny
projects (e.g. portfolio site, quiz app).
- 3–6 months: Build intermediate projects – add interactivity, learn a front-end framework (React/Vue),
and a bit of back-end (Node.js or Firebase). Use GitHub and deploy your work. By end of 6 months, you
should have a few completed projects in a portfolio.
- 6–9 months: Dive deeper – build a full-stack app (for example a small blog or e-commerce demo with
login). Learn essential tools (version control, basic algorithms). Practice coding problems on

1
HackerRank/LeetCode to prepare for tech interviews.
- 9–12 months: You can begin applying broadly. According to one guide, “for a beginner dedicating 15–20
hours per week, it’s possible to learn web development and become job-ready within 9–12 months” 5 . At
this point, polish your resume, start applying, and prepare for interviews.

Shortcuts: If you code full-time (like a bootcamp 40h/week), you might accelerate this by a few months.
Some beginners land simple internships in ~4–6 months by focusing on one stack (e.g. React+Node) and
doing a crash course, but expect to continue learning on the job. In general, consistent practice and
projects are key to speed (as noted, “the key is consistent learning and hands-on practice” 6 ).

Companies & Startups to Follow

Image: Students collaborating on a coding project (representative intern/teamwork scene).

Look for companies known to take interns in web/app roles, especially in major tech hubs. Examples
include:

• Big Tech & IT – Google (Bengaluru/Hyderabad), Microsoft (Hyderabad/Bengaluru), Amazon India

(Hyderabad/Mumbai), Adobe India (Noida/Gurgaon), IBM India. These firms all run formal
internship programs 4 . IT services giants like TCS, Infosys, Wipro, Tech Mahindra also hire interns
across their development projects.
• E‑commerce & Internet – Flipkart (Bengaluru), Amazon, Myntra (Bengaluru), Nykaa (Mumbai),
MakeMyTrip (Gurgaon). These companies have busy web platforms and often recruit interns. Also
large food-delivery platforms like Zomato (Delhi/Gurgaon) and Swiggy (Bengaluru) hire tech
interns.
• Fintech & Payments – PhonePe and Razorpay (Bengaluru), Paytm/One97 (Noida), PolicyBazaar
(Noida), Zerodha (Bengaluru), CRED (Bengaluru), MobiKwik (Gurgaon). These startups (and
established fintech firms) frequently post web or app dev internships.
• Consumer Tech & SaaS – Ola (Bengaluru), Oyo (Gurgaon), BigBasket (Bengaluru), Freshworks
(Chennai) and Zoho (Chennai) offer web/mobile projects. Also check Unacademy, BYJU’s, Vedantu
(Edtech, Bengaluru), and Cure.fit (health tech, Bengaluru).
• Startups & Emerging – Fast-growing startups often need developers. For example, Dream11
(Mumbai), Urban Company (Delhi), Swiggy, Delhivery (Gurgaon logistics), Meesho (Bengaluru),
Unacademy, BrowserStack (Mumbai), Chargebee (Chennai) etc. Follow tech startup job boards
(Wellfound/AngelList, Startup Jobs) to spot hiring sprees at new unicorns.

2
(Not all positions are remote, but many firms offer work-from-home options or have offices in Bengaluru/
Hyderabad/Pune/Mumbai/Chennai/Delhi. Check company career pages and LinkedIn regularly.)

Hackathons & Opportunity Platforms

• Smart India Hackathon (SIH): An annual nationwide student hackathon run by the Indian
government 7 . SIH challenges (Software/Hardware) let students solve real problems. Even if
you’re not in college, following SIH themes can inspire project ideas.
• Goldman Sachs India Hackathon 2025: A two-day online coding challenge (April–May 2025) for
CS/Quant students 8 . Top performers get a fast-track to Goldman Sachs interviews. Watch GS’s
site for updates and register via HackerRank.

(September 2025) 9 . It’s open to students and professionals in Web3/AI. Follow their website
for regional events and registration.
• 5G Innovation Hackathon 2025: Organized by India’s Department of Telecom, this is open to
students/startups/innovators to develop solutions on 5G testbeds 10 . The 2025 edition runs
through summer (call for proposals Mar–Apr 2025) and includes mentorship and prizes.
• Online Hackathon Platforms: Sites like HackerEarth, Devfolio, Devpost, and HackerRank
regularly list coding challenges and hackathons (some sponsored by tech companies). For
example, companies often host themed hackathons there (see HackerEarth’s events). Participate
to hone skills and get noticed by recruiters.
• Coding Competitions & Courses: Platforms like CodeChef, HackerRank, LeetCode, and
Kaggle (for ML/data) run contests year-round. They build problem-solving and can earn you
certificates/badges.
• Internship Sites: Finally, use dedicated internship/job platforms: Internshala, LinkedIn,
AngelList/Wellfound, Indeed, and niche sites (e.g. Startup Jobs). Set alerts for “web developer
intern” or “mobile intern” in cities like Bengaluru, Pune, Delhi NCR, etc. Many small companies
only advertise on these portals.

By combining project-based learning (with AI-assisted practice), following active companies, and
engaging in hackathons or coding challenges, a dedicated beginner can rapidly build credentials. Then,
within about 6–12 months of focused effort, they can start applying to a wide range of internships –
especially in India’s major tech hubs and remote-friendly startups 6 4 .
