Reported Speech – Simple Explanation and Practice

🌟 What is Reported Speech?


Reported speech (also called indirect speech) is used to tell what someone else said without
using their exact words.

Direct Speech vs. Reported Speech


Direct Speech Reported Speech

She said, “I am tired.” She said (that) she was tired.

He said, “I have finished my work.” He said (that) he had finished his work.

🧠 Important Changes in Reported Speech:


1. Pronouns change:
“I am happy.” → He said he was happy.

2. Tense usually changes (backshift):


- am/is → was
- are → were
- do/does → did
- have/has → had
- will → would
- can → could

3. Time expressions change:


- today → that day
- tomorrow → the next day
- yesterday → the day before

📘 Short Text (Direct Speech)


Anna met her friend Lily and told her:

“I’m going to the cinema tonight. I saw a great movie yesterday, and I want to watch it again.
I will buy popcorn too!”

📝 Exercise: Change the text to reported speech


Instructions: Rewrite Anna’s words in reported speech.

Example:
Anna said (that) she was going to the cinema that night.

Now you try:


1. “I saw a great movie yesterday.”
→ Anna said (that) _________________________________________

2. “I want to watch it again.”


→ Anna said (that) _________________________________________

3. “I will buy popcorn too!”
