Objective: Identify the different parts of the respiratory system.

Subject: Science

Grade Level: Grade 9

Learning across curriculum:

1. English Language Arts - Reading and understanding scientific texts about the
respiratory system.

2. Physical Education - Analyzing the connection between physical activity and the
respiratory system.

3. Health - Discussing the importance of maintaining a healthy respiratory system.

Review Motivation:

1. Show a video clip of a person engaging in physical activity and ask students to
identify how the respiratory system is involved.

2. Conduct a demonstration where students hold their breath for as long as they can,
and discuss the sensations they experience.

3. Display images of different respiratory diseases and ask students to share what
they know about them.

Activity 1: Respiratory System Model

Materials:

- Large poster board

- Colored markers

- Scissors

- Glue

- Printed images of the respiratory system

Instructions:

1. Divide students into small groups.

2. Provide each group with the materials.

3. Instruct students to draw and label the different parts of the respiratory system the
poster board using the markers.

4. Have students cut out the printed images of the respiratory system and glue them
onto the appropriate locations on the poster board.

5. Encourage students to discuss the functions of each part as they work.

Rubric:

Criteria:

- Accuracy of labeling: 3 points

- Neatness and creativity: 2 points

- Collaboration within the group: 2 points

Total: 7 points

Assessment Questions:

1. What is the main function of the trachea?

2. How does the diaphragm contribute to the process of breathing?

Activity 2: Respiratory System Diagram Analysis

Materials:

- Respiratory system diagrams (one per student)

- Highlighters or colored pencils

Instructions:

1. Distribute the respiratory system diagrams to each student.

2. Instruct students to use the highlighters or colored pencils to color-code and label
the different parts of the respiratory system.

3. Encourage students to discuss the functions and connections between the parts
as they work.

Rubric:

Criteria:

- Accuracy of labeling and color-coding: 4 points

- Completion of all parts: 2 points

- Clear explanations of connections: 2 points

Total: 8 points

Assessment Questions:

1. How does the respiratory system work together with the circulatory system?

2. Explain the role of the alveoli in the process of respiration.

Activity 3: Respiratory System Role-Play

Materials:

- Index cards with respiratory system parts written on them

- Stopwatch or timer
Instructions:

1. Divide students into pairs.

2. Give each pair an index card with a respiratory system part written on it.

3. Instruct the pairs to create a short role-play where they act out the function of their
assigned.

4. Set a limit (e.g., 2 minutes) for role-play.

5. Allow students to perform their roleplays in front of the class.

Rubric:

Criteria:

- Accuracy of portrayal: 4 points

- Creativity and engagement: 3 points

- Clarity of explanation: 3 points

Total: 10 points

Assessment Questions:

1. Name one respiratory system part and describe its function.

2. How does each part of the respiratory system contribute to the overall process of
respiration?

Analysis:

After each activity, have a class discussion to analyze the outcomes. Ask students to
share their observations, insights, and any challenges they encountered during the
activities. Encourage critical thinking and reflection on the importance of the
respiratory system in maintaining overall health.

Abstraction:

Summarize the key points discussed during the analysis and highlight the
significance of understanding the different parts of the respiratory system.
Application:

Provide students with a real-life problem related to the respiratory system, such as
analyzing the impact of air pollution on respiratory health in their community. Ask
them to research and propose solutions to address this problem.

Assessment:

Teachers can assess students' learning based on the learning objectives by using
rubrics for the activities, conducting quizzes or tests, and evaluating students'
participation in class discussions and presentations.

Assignment:

For homework, ask students to write a short essay discussing the importance of
maintaining a healthy respiratory system and how they can take care of their own
respiratory health.
