EXERCISES Chapter 6 and Chapter 7

HEAT EXCHANGER SYSTEM DESIGN

USING PINCH ANALYSIS METHOD
Exercise 1
•Determine the pinch point and minimum utility consumptions QH,min &
QC,min corresponding to ΔTmin=20 K
•Build the network of heat exchangers in accordance with the pinch
analysis results at ΔTmin=20 K
•Use loop and path to simplify the obtained heat exchanger network system

Temperature oC Hea flowrate Enthalpy

capacity CP H
Flow Supply Target kW/K kW
1 280 70 4 840
2 170 70 2 200
3 110 160 5 -250
4 60 270 3 -630
Steps 1 & 2: Shift temperatures (by a figure of Tmin/2 = 10
oC) and divide temperature range into temperature intervals

Flow TS (°C) TT (°C) T*S (°C) T*T (°C)

1 (Hot) 280 70  280 - 10 = 270 70-10 = 60

2 (Hot) 170 70 170-10 = 160 70-10 = 60

3 (Cold) 110 160 110+10 = 120 160+10 = 170

4 (Cold) 60 270 60+10 = 70 270+10 = 280
Steps 1 & 2: Shift temperatures and divide
temperature range into temperature intervals
Step 3: Calculate enthalpy balance in each interval

H1 = (0-3)*(280-270) = -30

H2 = (4-3)*(270-170) = 100

H3 = (4-5-3)*10 = -40

H4 = (4+2-5-3)*40 = -80

H5 = (4+2-3)*50 =150

H6 = (4+2-0)*(70-60) = 60
Step 4: Construct the heat cascade (infeasible)

Minimum hot utility consumption QH,min = 50 kW

Minimum cold utility consumption QC,min = 210 kW
