Tutorial 2

The document contains thermodynamics problems related to the properties of pure substances, requiring calculations of pressure, volume, temperature, and enthalpy for various states of water and R-134a. It includes questions on closed systems, phase determination, and graphical representation on T-v and P-v diagrams. Additionally, it addresses scenarios involving rigid tanks and piston-cylinder devices with specific conditions and processes.

TOPIC 2: Properties of Pure Substances Prepared by: FARIZA/PKK/APR2024

QUESTION 1
i) For the closed systems given below, state the phase (if necessary), calculate the quality, x (if any) and
determine the required properties.

a. Saturated water vapour at 120oC. What is P (in MPa) and v (m3/kg) of the system?
b. Water at 300oC and has specific internal energy, u = 1332.7 kJ/kg. What are the P and h of the system?
c. Water at 80 bar and has specific enthalpy, h = 1000 kJ/kg. What is v (m3/kg) of the system?
d. Water at 2 bar and v = 1.54934 m3/kg. What is T and u of the system?
e. R-134a at 52oC and specific enthalpy, h = 180 kJ/kg. What is P (in MPa) and v (m3/kg) of the system?
f. R-134a at 5 bar and u = 315 kJ/kg. What is T and v of the system?
g. Water with x = 0 at P= 280 kPa. State the T and v of the system.
h. Water at 350 kPa and 500oC. State the enthalpy of the system
i. Water at 1900 kPa and 330oC. Give the specific volume of the system.

ii) Locate each system given above on both T-v and P-v diagrams with respect to saturation lines.

QUESTION 2
A 1.8m3 rigid tank contains steam at 220oC. One-third of the volume is in liquid phase and the rest in vapor form.
Determine the pressure of the system, the quality and the density of the system.

QUESTION 3
Consider a rigid tank that contains 1 kg of saturated liquid water at 110oC. The system is heated until only vapor
exists and the final temperature reads 290oC.
a. State the initial pressure of the system (in kPa)
b. Name the type of process that is being applied to the system.
c. State the phase of water at final state.
d. Determine the final pressure of the system.
e. Show the process on both T-v and P-v diagrams.

QUESTION 4
Consider a piston-cylinder device that consists of 2 kg of R-134a at 40oC and x = 0.7. The system is cooled until
the temperature drops to 18oC. State the final phase of R-134a in the piston cylinder device and give the volume
(m3) of the system at final phase.
