Tutorial 2

This document outlines a tutorial for the Physics of Waves course at IIT Kharagpur, focusing on various problems related to oscillations, damping, and resonance. It includes questions on the behavior of damped oscillators, the effects of damping coefficients, and the analysis of forced oscillators. Additionally, it covers concepts related to LCR circuits and resonance conditions.

Tutorial-2

1. A door shutter has a spring which, in the absence of damping, shuts the door in 0.5s. The
problem is that the door bangs with a speed of 1m/s at the instant that it shuts. A damper
with a damping coefficient β is introduced to ensure that the door shuts gradually. What
is the time required for the door to shut and the velocity of the door at the instant it shuts
if β = 0.5π and β = 0.9π?
: Note that the spring is unstretched when the door is closed.

2. A critically damped oscillator is initially at x = 0 with velocity v0 . What is the ratio of the
maximum kinetic energy to the maximum potential energy of this oscillator?

3. A particle is displaced from the equilibrium position by a distance l = 1.0 cm and then
left alone. What is the distance that the particle covers till its oscillations die down, if the
logarithmic decrement is equal to λ = 0.020?

4. A simple pendulum oscillates in a medium for which the logarithmic decrement is equal to
λ0 = 1.50. What will be the logarithmic decrement if the resistance of the medium increases
by a factor n = 2.00? By what factor has the resistance of the medium to be increased for
the oscillations to become impossible?

5. A 2 kg object oscillates on a spring of force constant k = 400 N/m. The damping constant
b = 2.00kg/s. The system is driven by a sinusoidal force of maximum value 10 N and
angular frequency ω = 10 rad/s.
(a) What is the amplitude of the oscillations?
(b) If the driving frequency is varied, at what frequency will resonance occur?
(c) Find the amplitude of oscillation at resonance.
(d) What is the width of the resonance curve ∆ω?

6. Consider the forced oscillator differential equation,

d2 x
m + kx = F0 cos(ωd t)
dt2
where ωd is the driving frequency. Demonstrate that the general solution x(t) represents
an unbound oscillation at resonance.

7. Show that in a resonant LCR series circuit the maximum potential across the condenser
occurs at a frequency ω = ω0 (1 − 1/2Q20 )1/2 where ω02 = (LC)−1 and Q0 = ω0 L/R.
