Computer Basics - Detailed Notes

1. Introduction to Computers
A computer is an electronic device that can perform a variety of tasks according to a set of

instructions (called programs).

It can process, store, retrieve and display data.

Modern computers are used in almost every field including education, business, healthcare, and

entertainment.
2. Types of Computers
- Desktop Computers: Meant for regular use at a single location.

- Laptops: Portable computers with built-in screen and battery.

- Tablets and Smartphones: Touch-based portable devices.

- Servers: Powerful machines that manage network resources.


3. Components of a Computer System
A computer system has both hardware and software components.

- Input Devices: Keyboard, Mouse, Scanner, Microphone

- Output Devices: Monitor, Printer, Speakers

- CPU: Brain of the computer that processes data

- Memory: RAM (Temporary), ROM (Permanent)

- Storage: HDD, SSD, Pen Drive, Memory Card


4. Software
Software is a set of instructions given to the computer to perform specific tasks.
