1. Write the full form of LASER? Mention two characteristics/features of Laser.


2. Differentiate between Spontaneous and Stimulated emission of radiation.
3. What is the role of Helium in He-Ne Laser? Sate two applications of He-Ne laser.
4. Why Semiconductor laser is much preferred over other lasers?
5. What is a blackbody? Give an example of a blackbody.
6. State Stefan-Boltzmann’s law and Wien’s displacement law.
7. What is ultraviolet catastrophe?
8. What is Photoelectric effect? Write the Einstein’s photoelectric equation.
9. State Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle.
10. What do you mean by Eigen value and Eigen functions? Give the mathematical expressions for the
momentum and energy operators of a moving particle in one dimension.
11. Define Compton effect.
12. Classify the solid materials based on band structure.
13. What do you mean by valence and conduction band in a solid?
14. What do you mean by Band-gap? Why is it called forbidden?
15. Write short notes on P-type and N-type semiconductor.
16. Draw and explain E-k diagram. Write one significance of the E-k diagram.

20. What is XRD? Define Bragg’s law.

1. Mention one solid state laser. Draw a diagram to show its construction. Mention its working mechanism
with proper energy level diagram. State one disadvantage of the laser.
2. Define optical fibre. Derive the expression of Numerical Aperture (N.A.) of an optical fibre. Explain the
structure of optical fibre with proper diagram.
3. Explain in detail the interaction of e-m radiation with matter with proper energy diagrams.
OR
Explain stimulated absorption, spontaneous emission and stimulated emission of radiation.
4. Derive the relation between Einstein’s co-efficient of stimulated absorption, spontaneous emission and
stimulated emission.
5. Explain the components of Laser. What is the role of an optical resonator?
6. Derive the expression for time dependent Schrodinger’s equation in one dimension.
7. Derive the expression for time independent Schrodinger’s equation one dimension.
8. (a) Write the expression of energy for a particle trapped in a one dimensional infinite potential well.
(b) Write the expression of the wave function of a particle trapped in an infinite potential well in the nth
energy level.
(c) Define quantum tunnelling with example.
9. (a) State de Broglie’s hypothesis. (b) Derive the expression showing wave-particle duality.
10. What is a wave function? State the significances of a wave function.
11. What is effective mass of an electron? Derive an expression for the effective mass (m*) of an electron in
the valence and conduction band.
12. (a) Derive the concentration of electrons in the conduction band of a semiconductor.
(b) Find out the position of fermi level in (i) intrinsic (ii) extrinsic semiconductor (N-type and P-type)
with proper band diagrams.
13. (a) What are the three types of junction photodiodes?
(b) Discuss the structure and working mechanism of PN, PIN and APD junction photodiodes.
(c) Mention two applications of Junction Photodiodes.
14. Discuss the construction and working mechanism of a light emitting diode (LED) with relevant diagrams.
15. Define nanomaterial. Discuss how the physical, mechanical, thermal, electrical and optical properties
are altered/changed when a bulk material is reduced to nano-dimensions.

NUMERICALS
1. An LED emitting red light of mean wavelength 630 nm have a wavelength spread of 20 nm. Find the
coherence length of light.
2. The emitted power from an optical fibre power, after propagating through 1.5 km length, is reduced to 95
% of its original value. Compute the power loss in dB/km.
3. Calculate the de Broglie wavelength associated with an electron of energy 1.5 eV.
4. Calculate the velocity of the ejected photoelectron for the incident photon energy of 5 eV. The threshold
energy for the photosensitive metal is given by 3.2 eV.
5. X-rays of wavelength 0.75Å are scattered by a target at an angle of 45⁰. Calculate the wavelength of
scattered X-rays.
6. An electron is bound in one-dimensional potential well of the width 0.18 nm. Find the energy value in eV
for the second excited state. Given m = 9.1×10-31 kg, h=6.626×10-34 J.s.
