Objective:

1. To study Computerized Control of Flow Rate and Characteristics

Background:

1. Rotameter is a variable-area flow meter that provides a direct visual reading of flow rate by the position of the float
as shown below:

Page 2 of 11
2. A Paddle Wheel Flow Meter is also a variable-area flow meter. It, however, provides a process signal proportional
to flow rate as shown below:

Page 3 of 11
Procedure

1. Set up the system shown below,

2. Power up the Paddle Wheel Flow Transmitter. To do so, connect the POWER INPUT terminals of Paddle Wheel
Flow Transmitter to the 24 V DC Power Supply. Turn DC Power Supply ON

3. Set the SPAN knob of the Paddle Wheel Flow Transmitter at MAX

4. Make sure the reservoir of the Pumping Unit is filled with about 12 liters (3.2 gallons US) of water. Make sure the
baffle plate is properly installed at the bottom of the reservoir

5. On the Pumping Unit, adjust valves HV1 to HV3 as follows:

- Open HV1 completely

- Close HV2 completely
- Set HV3 for directing the full reservoir to the pump inlet

6. Turn on the Pumping Unit by setting POWER switch to “I”

7. Make the variable-speed drive of the Pumping Unit rotate at maximum speed: with the controller in the manual
(open - loop) mode, set the controller output at 100% from Computer Interface

8. Connect the Multimeter to 0-5 V OUTPUT of the Paddle Wheel Flow Transmitter

Page 4 of 11
9. Turn the SPAN adjustment knob of the Paddle Wheel Flow Transmitter counterclockwise to increase the voltage
and stop turning it as soon as the voltage reaches about 5.0 V

10. Turn off the Pumping Unit by setting POWER switch to “O”

11. Connect the 4 – 20mA Output of the Paddle Wheel Flow Transmitter to Input 1 of the 4 – 20mA Input of LabVolt
Series 9065-B0 Interface Module

12. Turn on the Pumping Unit by setting POWER switch to “I”

13. Adjust the controller output to 0% from the Computer Interface. Click on “CH” and “Set Channels” will Open,

Configure Set Channels as follows:

Channel = Channel 1
Label = Flow Trend
Type = Percentage
Unit = Percentage /min

Minimum value and

Maximum value will be
set by Default to be
“0” and “100”
respectively

Do not set “Filter…”

When done, Click “OK”

Page 5 of 11
14. With controller output at 60%, measure and record the voltage at 0-5 V OUTPUT of Paddle Wheel Flow
Transmitter and the Flow Rate from Rotameter,

Measured Voltage at 0-5V OUTPUT of Paddle Wheel Flow Transmitter at 60% output = V

Flow Rate from Rotameter at 60% output = L / min.

15. Adjust the controller output to 100% from the Computer Interface,

16. With controller output at 100%, measure and record the voltage at the 0-5 V OUTPUT of Paddle Wheel Flow
Transmitter and Flow Rate from Rotameter,

Measured Voltage at 0-5V OUTPUT of Paddle Wheel Flow Transmitter at 100% output = V

Flow Rate from Rotameter at 100% output = L / min.

17. Add Flow Trend by Clicking on “Add”.

Play

18. Configure “Trend Display” for Flow Trend in Computer Interface as shown below,

19. Configure “Trend Recorder” in Computer Interface as shown below and Click On “Play” as shown in Step 17,

Page 7 of 11
20. Adjust the controller output to make the flow rate be around 80%/min, which will look similar as below,

21. Create a .pdf File of Flow Trend Graph by Pulling Down “File”, and Clicking On “Print …”,

Page 8 of 11
22. Save as PDF your Flow Trend Graph. Send the .pdf File of your Flow Trend Graph to yourself as an e-mail
attachment to yourself so that you can attach it to this Lab Report.

Page 9 of 11
23. Download your Flow Trend Graph attachment from your e-mail and combine it as a .pdf with this Lab
Report. (Your Flow Trend Graph will be similar to the Sample Flow Trend Graph shown below for reference,)

24. Turn off the Pumping Unit by setting its POWER switch at “O”.

25. Disconnect the circuit. Return the components and hoses to their storage locations.

26. Wipe off any water from the floor and the Process Control Training System using paper wipes.

27. Explain the reason below if your Flow Trend Graph looks “Choppy”.

Page 10 of 11
28. Based on the flow rate of 80%/min, calculate the voltage at the 0-5 V OUTPUT of Paddle Wheel Flow
Transmitter.

Show calculation steps and result below:

29. Calculate the difference between the voltage reading value of the multimeter and the calculated voltage in the
previous step.

Show calculation steps and result below:
