3. A composite wall is formed of a 2.5 cm copper plate (K= 355 W/mK), a 3.2 mm layer of
asbestos (K= 0.110 W/m K) and a 5 cm layer of fiber plate (k= 0.049 W/mK). The wall is subjected to
an overall temperature difference of 560°C ( 560°C on the Cu plate side and 0°C on the fiber plate side).
Estimate the heat flux through this composite wall and the interface temperature between asbestos and
fiber plate. (13)
4. A steel pipe line (k=50 W/m K) of I.D. 100 mm and O.D. 110 mm is to be covered with two layers of
insulation each having a thickness of 50 mm. The thermal conductivity of the first insulation material is
0.06 W/m K and that of second is 0.12 W/m K. Calculate the loss of heat per meter length of pipe and
the interface temperature between the two layers of insulation when the temperature of the inside tube
surface is 250ºC and that of the outside surface of the insulation is 50ºC. (Ans: 29.27 w)

5. An aeroplane flies with a speed of 450 km/h at a height where the surrounding air has a temperature
of 3º C and pressure of 65 cm of Hg. The aeroplane wing idealised as a flat plate 6m long, 1.2 m wide
is maintained at 17º C. If the flow is made parallel to the 6 m length calculate: (i) Heat loss from the
wing, (ii) Drag force on the wing. (13)
6. (a) Air at 400 K and 1 atm pressure flows at a speed of 1.5 m/s over a flat plate of 2m long. The plate
is maintained at a uniform temperature of 300 K. If the plate has a width of 0.5 m, estimate the heat
transfer coefficient and the rate of heat transfer from the airstream to the plate. Also estimate the drag
force acting on the plate. (13)
7. (a) Air at 20° C and atmospheric pressure is flowing over a flat plate at a velocity of 3 m/s. If the
plate is 30 cm wide and at a temperature of 60° C, calculate at X= 0.3 m;
8. Explain briefly the various regimes of pool boiling of water at atmospheric pressure. (13)
10. The bottom of copper pan, 300 mm in diameter is maintained at 120ºC by an electric heater.
Calculate the power required to boil water in this pan. What is the evaporation rate? Estimate the
critical heat flux. (13)
11. A vertical tube 80 mm O.D. and 1 m long is exposed to saturated steam at atmospheric pressure.
The outer surface of the tube is maintained at 60°C by the flow of cold water through the tube.
Compute the rate of heat transfer and the condensation rate at the surface. (13)
13. A furnace wall emits radiation at 2500K. Treating it as black body radiation, calculate
14. Two very large parallel planes exchange heat by radiation. The emissivities of the planes are
respectively 0.8 and 0.3. To minimize the radiation exchange between the planes; a polished
aluminium radiation shield is placed between them. If the emissivity of the shield is 0.04 on
both sides, find the percentage reduction in heat transfer rate. (13)
15. Explain briefly the similarities between heat transfer and mass transfer. (or) Discuss
briefly the analogy between heat and mass transfer. (7)
16. Define the Schmidt, Sherwood and Lewis numbers. What is the physical significance of each? (6)
17. Explain briefly about Equimolar counter diffusion. (or) Derive an expression for equimolar counter
diffusion between two gases or liquids. (13)
18. An open pan, 20 cm diameter and 8 cm deep contains water at 25ºC and is exposed to dry
atmospheric air. Estimate the diffusion coefficient of water in air, if the rate of diffusion of water is
8.54 X 10- 4 kg/h. (13)
19. Dry air at 30ºC and 1 bar flows over a wet flat plate 50 cm long at a velocity of 50 m/s. Calculate
the mass transfer coefficient of water vapour in air at the end of the plate. (13)
