The document outlines a continuous assessment for a course on Fundamentals of Machine Element Design, specifically focusing on gear drives. It includes questions on gear terminology, gear interference, and calculations related to gear parameters such as diameter, module, and loads. The assessment is structured to evaluate both theoretical understanding and practical application of gear design concepts.

Date – June 2022 / Batch – 19th Batch Duration – 45 minutes Question 1
1) Following questions are related from Gear Drives.
a) Draw a basic gear profile and mark the following ‘terms’ on that gear profile. (4 marks) i) Addendum ii) Dedendum iii) Pitch Circle iv) Face Width b) Briefly describe the term “Gear Interference” and explain the reasons to the reasons a designer should avoid it. (5 marks) c) A gear wheel has following particulars. Calculate the following parameters using the details given below. Distance between the centers – 660 mm / Gear ratio – 10:1 / Amount of Power transmitted by pinion at 1800 r.p.m is 500 kW / Pressure angle – 22.5 ° / Number of Teeth on Pinion – 14 / permissible normal pressure between teeth – 175 N per mm of width. i) Calculate the diameter of the Pinion Wheel. (3 Marks) ii) Calculate the module of the gear drive. (2 Marks) iii) Calculate the tangential load on the pinion. (2 Marks) iv) Calculate the normal load on the pinion. (2 Marks) v) Calculate the necessary width of the pinion. (2 Marks)
