Research Methods Exercise

The document outlines an exercise for students at the International Libyan University to identify three potential Final Year Project (FYP) topics in specified engineering fields and find two credible references for each topic. Students are provided with a list of fields and sample topics, as well as guidelines on how to search for reliable academic references. The submission must include topic descriptions, references in citation format, and justifications for the credibility of each reference.

Exercise: Finding FYP Topics & Reliable References

Objective:

 Identify 3 potential Final Year Project(FYP) topics in their field.

 Find 2 credible references (journal/conference papers) for each topic.

Step-by-Step Instructions for Students

1. Choose Your Field

Pick one of the following domains:

 Mechatronics (Robotics, Automation, Control Systems)

 Computer Networks (5G, SDN, IoT Security)
 Programming (Algorithms, Software Engineering, DevOps)
 AI/ML (Computer Vision, NLP, Generative AI)
 Telecommunications (6G, Satellite Comm, Optical Networks)
 Architecture (Smart Cities, Sustainable Design, BIM)

2. Brainstorm Topics (Example Ideas Provided)

Use these sample topics or come up with your own:

Sample FYP Topics Field

- AI-based robotic arm control using reinforcement learning

Mechatronics
- Energy-efficient pneumatic systems for industrial automation

- Machine Learning for DDoS detection in SDN

Computer Networks
- LoRaWAN optimization for smart agriculture

- Automated code vulnerability scanner using NLP

Programming
- GPU-accelerated sorting algorithms

- Fake news detection using transformer models

AI/ML
- AI-driven predictive maintenance in manufacturing
Sample FYP Topics Field

- Beamforming optimization in 5G using AI

Telecommunications
- Free-space optical communication for rural areas

- AI-assisted BIM for sustainable construction

Architecture
- Smart lighting systems for energy-efficient buildings

3. Find 2 Reliable References per Topic

Use these academic databases:

 IEEE Xplore ( https://ieeexplore.ieee.org/ )

 ScienceDirect ( https://www.sciencedirect.com/ )
 SpringerLink ( https://link.springer.com/ )
 Google Scholar ( https://scholar.google.com/ )

✅ Search Tips:

 Use keywords (e.g., "AI robotic arm control reinforcement learning").

 Filter by "Last 5 years" and "Peer-reviewed".
 Check citation count (high = influential paper).

Evaluate References (Apply the CRAAP Test) .4

Questions to Ask Criterion

?Is it published in the last 5 years Currency

?Does it directly support my topic Relevance

?Is the author from a reputable university/company Authority

?Is it peer-reviewed? Are methods well-explained Accuracy

?Is it academic (not promotional) Purpose

Submission Format .5
Students should submit:
1. 3 potential FYP topics (with 1–2 sentence descriptions).
2. 2 references per topic (APA/IEEE citation format).
3. A short justification for why each reference is credible.
