Research Variables Assignment

Variables are essential in research as they help form hypotheses and analyze outcomes. They can be categorized into independent variables, dependent variables, and control variables, each playing a distinct role in experiments. Understanding these types is crucial for conducting effective scientific research.

Research Variables: Definition and

Examples
Introduction
In research, variables play a critical role as they help in forming hypotheses, conducting
experiments, and analyzing outcomes. Understanding the types and roles of variables is
fundamental for any research process.

Definition of Variables
A variable is any characteristic, number, or quantity that can be measured or quantified. It is
something that can be changed and measured. Variables are typically used in scientific
experiments to determine if changes in one element cause changes in another.

According to Bhandari (2020), variables are properties or characteristics of some event,

object, or person that can take on different values or amounts.

Types of Variables with Examples

Independent Variable
An independent variable is the one that is changed or controlled in a scientific experiment
to test the effects on the dependent variable.
Example: In a study to determine whether studying for an hour daily improves test scores,
the amount of time spent studying is the independent variable.

Dependent Variable
A dependent variable is the variable being tested and measured in an experiment. It is
dependent on the independent variable.
Example: In the same study, the test scores are the dependent variable because they are
affected by how much the student studies.

Control Variable
Control variables are quantities that a scientist wants to remain constant, and they must be
observed as carefully as the dependent variables.
Example: If the test is about studying and performance, then using the same test and
environment for all participants ensures consistency.
