1. Let A be an n × n matrix. Show that:

(a) If λ is eigenvalue of A, show that λn is eigenvalue of An .
(b) If A is idempotent (A2 = A) then eigenvalues of A are either 0 or 1.
(c) If A is nilpotent (Am = 0 for some m ≥ 1) then all eigenvalues of A are 0.
(d) If A⊺ = A then, the eigenvalues are all real.
(e) If A⊺ = −A then, the eigenvalues are either zero or purely imaginary.
2. Let A be an n × n invertible matrix. Show that eigenvalues of A−1 are reciprocal of the eigenvalues of A, also show that
A and A−1 have the same eigenvectors.

3. Let A be an n × n matrix and α be a scalar. Find the eigenvalues of A − αI in terms of eigenvalues of A. Further show
that A and A − αI have the same eigenvectors.
4. Let A be an n × n matrix. Show that A⊺ and A have the same eigenvalues. Do they have the same eigenvectors?

5. Let A =  3 −2 −3 . Find a matrix S such that S −1 AS is a diagonal matrix and hence calculate A6 .

6. The 3 × 3 matrix A has (1, 2, 1) and (1, 1, 0) as eigenvectors, both with eigenvalue 7, and its trace is 2. Find the
determinant of A.

8. If for any arbitrary 2 × 2 matrix A, the |A| = 13, and tr(A) = 15. Then find the value of tr(A2 ).
9. Find two different 2 × 2 matrices A, and B, both have the same eigenvalues λ1 = λ2 = 2, and both have the same (only
one) eigenvector (1, 0).

10. Let A denote a 2021 × 2021 real matrix with all entries equal to 1, and let I denote identity matrix of order 2021. Find
the determinant of the matrix A − I.
11. Find three different 2 × 2 matrices A, B and C, such that they have the same eigenvalues λ1 = λ2 = 3, and the same
(only one) eigenvector [3, 0]⊤ .
