COURSE OUTCOMES: After completion of the course, the student should be able to

CO-1: Understand the components and models of computer network

CO-2: Familiarize Connection oriented and Connectionless services

UNIT-I:

Data Communications: Networks – Components and Categories, Direction of Data flow, Types of
Connections, Topologies, Layering and Protocols. Physical Layer: Multiplexing, Transmission Media,
Switching - Circuit Switched Networks, Packet Switched Networks.

UNIT-II:

Link Layer: Link layer Services, Framing, Error Detection, Flow control – Noiseless Channels, Noisy
Channels, HDLC, Point to Point Protocols. Media Access Control Layer: ALOHA, CSMA/CD, CSMA/CA,
Random access, Controlled access – Channelization.

UNIT-III:

Network Layer: Logical Addressing, Internetworking – IPv4, IPv6, Tunneling, ARP, RARP, ICMP, IGMP,
Routing Protocols – Distance Vector, Link State, Path Vector, DVMRP, CBT.

UNIT-IV:

Transport Layer: UDP, TCP protocols, Data Traffic, Congestion, Congestion Control, QoS Techniques.

UNIT-V:

Application Layer: Domain Name Space, Electronic Mail - SMTP, POP3, IMAP, MIME, HTTP, FTP,
WWW, SNMP.

CCN Lab

1. Implement the cross-wired cable and straight through cable using clamping tool.
2. Implement basic network command and network configuration commands.
3. Implement the data link layer framing methods - Character stuffing and Bit stuffing.
4. Implement error detection methods - Parity check, CRC, Checksum.
5. Configure Bus, Ring network topologies.
6. Configure Star, Mesh network topologies.
7. Implement Stop and Wait, Go back N and Selective Repeat protocols.
8. Connect computers in LAN and WAN configuration and assign IP addresses.
9. Configure a Network using Distance Vector Routing protocol.
10. Configure Network using Link State Vector Routing protocol.
11. Implement OSPF Algorithm
12. Configure Network using TCP and UDP Protocol.
