NUTRITION IN ANIMALS

SHORT ANSWER TYPE QUESTIONS:

1. INCISORS: Two pairs in each jaw.


CANINES: One pair in each jaw.
PREMOLARS: Two pairs in each jaw
MOLARS: Three pairs in each jaw
2. The alternate contraction and expansion of different parts of alimentary canal is called
peristalsis.
3. Teeth help in breaking the food into smaller parts so that it becomes easy to swallow.
4. Tongue helps in mixing saliva into food.
5. The stomach secretes mucus, acid and some enzymes.
6. The pancreas is a cream coloured organ situated below the stomach which produces many
enzymes that are sent to the small intestine.
7. The process of breaking food into simple substances is called digestion. Since the body
cannot utilize nutrients like carbohydrates, protein and fat these need to be broken down
into simple substances so that the body can utilize them.
8. Utilization of food for various purposes of the organism is called assimilation.
9. Small intestine is longer than large intestine while large intestine is thicker than small
intestine.
LONG ANSWER TYPE QUESTIONS:
1. The different types of teeth and their role are as follows:
a. INCISOR: These are chisel shaped and meant for cutting the food.
b. CANINE: These are pointed at the top and meant for tearing the food.
c. PREMOLAR: These are flat on top and meant for cracking the food.
d. MOLAR: These are flat on top and meant for grinding the food.
2. Stomach is a bag like structure in the shape of English letter J connected to the
oesophagus at one end and to the small intestine at the other end. It secretes mucus,
acid and many enzymes. Mucus protects the inner lining of the stomach while acid kills
the germs which may be present in food.
3. Villi are finger like structures on the inner surface of the small intestine loaded with
blood capillaries through which food is absorbed.
Absorption of food takes place in the later part of the small intestine which has
numerous villi. These villi serve two purposes:
i. Reduces the passage size in small intestine thus allowing the food to stay there
for a longer time.
ii. Increases the surface area for absorption.
4. Rumen is the special structure in the digestive system of a buffalo that helps in digestion
of cellulose. The rumen has some bacteria inside it that helps to digest the cellulose.
5. An amoeba is a single celled animal with an irregular shape having finger like projection
called pseudopodia. Once a food particle comes near amoeba it captures it with the
pseudopodia and forms a food vacuole around the food particle. Enzymes present in the
food vacuole digest the food and the undigested food is expelled out of the cell of
amoeba.
