coffee. To prepare brand A, he uses 60% Robusta and 40% Arabica coffee. To prepare brand B he
uses 50% Robusta and 50% Arabica coffee. The ratio of brand A to brand B does not exceed 3:5

a) Write down all inequalities representing the above information, other than y > 0 and x > 0 (3marks)

b) Draw the inequalities on the grid provided. (4marks)

c) The selling price per kg of brand A is shs.200, while that of brand B per kg is shs.300. Determine the
maximum revenue. (3marks)

2. A farmer has 50 acres of land. He has a capital Shs. 2,400,000 to grow carrots and potatoes as
cash crops.

The cost of growing carrots is Shs.40,000 per acre and that of growing potatoes is Shs.60,000 per acre.
He estimates that the respective profits per acre are Shs.30,000 (on carrots) and Shs. 40,000 (on
potatoes). By letting X and Y to represent carrots and potatoes respectively:-

a) Form suitable inequalities to represent this information. (4marks)

b) By representing this information on a graph, determine on how many acres he should grow each crop
for maximum profit. (4marks)

c) Find the maximum profit. (2marks)

3. Skydot Airport is planning to build a fire fighting plant on a space of 250m². Two types of
machines are to be installed, machine x which occupies a space of 5m² and machine Y which
occupies 10m². The airport can have a maximum of 40 machines at a time. At most 15 machines
of type Y are used at any given time.

a) Write down three inequalities other than x>0, and y>0. (3marks)

b) On the grid below, show the region satisfying the given conditions. (3marks)

c) The profit from a type x machine is Ksh 1000 and that of type y is 4000.

(i) Write down the objective function. (1mark)

(ii) Use the graph to obtain the number of machines of each type that should be installed to obtain
maximum profit. (2marks)

(iii) Calculate the maximum profit

4. A transporter is required to transport 800 passengers and 60 tonnes of luggage. It has two kinds
of vehicles, Buses which carry 60 passengers and 8 tonnes of luggage each, and lorries which
can carry 90 passengers and 40 tonnes of luggage each. Only 10 buses and 8 lorries are
available.

a) Write down the inequalities that satisfy the facts given above. Let x be the number of buses and y be
the number of lorries. (4marks)

b) (i) Represent the inequalities formed graphically. (5marks)

(ii) Find the least number of vehicles that can be used. (1mark)

5. The manager of Tamutamu Motel has enough funds to buy a total of 100 crates of soft drinks of
type A and type B. He wishes to buy at least twice as many crates of type A as of type B. He

represent the number of crates of type A and y the number of crates of type B.

a) Write down all the inequalities which represent the above information. (4marks)

c) The profit from the sale of a crate of type A is sh. 60 while that of type B is sh. 40, find the number of

7. A travelling company runs a fleet of two types of buses operating between Nairobi and
Mombasa. Type A bus has a capacity to take 52 passengers and 200kg of luggage. Type B
carried 32 passengers and 300kg of luggage. On a certain day, there were 500 passengers with
3500kg of luggage to be transported. The company could only use a maximum of 15 buses
altogether.

a) If the company uses x buses of type A and y buses of type B. Write down all the inequalities satisfied
by the given conditions. (4marks)

b) Represent the inequalities graphically and use your graph to determine the smallest number of buses
that could be used. (4marks)

c) If the cost of running one bus of type A is 7,200/= and that of running one bus of type B is sh. 6000.
Find the minimum cost of running the buses. (2marks)

8. A dealer wishes to purchase cookers and refrigerators. He can buy at most 60 of both items. On
average, a cooker and a refrigerator costs sh. 8000 and sh 24,000 respectively. He must spend at
least sh. 480,000. The number of refrigerators should be at most four times the number of
cookers. He must buy more than 10 refrigerators. Taking the number of cookers to be x and the
number of refrigerators to be y:

a) Form all inequalities to represent the above information and graph them. (5marks)

b)
If the dealer makes a profit of sh.1200 and sh.2000 per cooker and refrigerator respectively, find the
maximum profit he will make. (2marks)

c) During a sales promotion week, the dealer declared a discount of 10% and 5% on the display prices
of each cooker and refrigerator respectively. Determine his new maximum profit. (3marks)

9. A shop keeper stocks two brands of soft drinks called Softa and Topez which are produced in
cans of the same size. He needs to order fresh supplies and has room for upto 400 cans. Topez is
more popular and he decides to order at least twice as many cans of Topez as Softa. He wishes,
however to have at least 100 cans of Softa and not more than 300 cans of Topez.

a) By Taking x to be the number of cans of Softa and y the number of cans Topez which he orders, write
down four inequalities involving x and y which satisfy these conditions (2 marks)

b) By graphing the inequalities indicate the region in which x and y must lie. (4 marks)

c) Given further that the profit on a can of Softa is Sh 3 and on a can of Topez is Sh 2 use your graph to
estimate the number of cans of each type the shopkeeper should order to give Maximum profit.

d) Determine the maximum profit made after selling the order made (2 marks)

10. A company produces shirts and jerseys using two different types of machines. Every short made
requires 2 hours on machine A and 2 hours on machine B. Every jersey made requires 3 hours on
machine A and 1 hour on machine B. In one day the time limit on machine A is 24 hours but that
on machine B is 12 hours. The number of jerseys produced must not be more than the shorts
produced in 1 day. The company makes a profit of Sh. 200 on each shirt and Sh. 200 on each
jersey, The company produces x shirts and y jerseys per day.
a) Write down four inequalities which must be satisfied by x and y and represent these inequalities
on a grid. (4 marks)

b) Find the value of x and y which will give the company maximum daily profit and also state the
maximum profit. (6 marks)

11. A county council intends to settle open air sellers in a suitable site, where 12000m² space is
available. The sellers are to be divided into two groups A and B. Group A consists of fruit and
vegetable sellers and group B consists of clothes and hardware sellers. Each sellers in group A is
to be allocated a stall area of 4m². There must be more group A sellers than group B sellers.

a) Write down 4 inequalities representing this information and represent them on a graph. (8marks)

b) If each of group A seller is to pay a monthly stall rent of shs.50 and each of group B seller shs. 100
and given that the number of sellers in each group must be a multiple of 20, find the combination of
group A and B sellers that would give the county maximum revenue. Determine the maximum revenue
be collected. (3marks)

12. At form three level, a student is required to do either history or geography but not both. In Pema
sub-county, there are three hundred form three students. Students taking history are more than
those taking geography but less than twice the number of geography students. Geography
students are not less than 50 while history students are not more than 200. If x represents the
number of students who take history and y represents the number of students who take
geography

a) Write down all the linear inequalities representing the information above. (4marks)

b) Represent your inequalities on a graph (4marks)

c) The cost of enrolling for geography is ksh 100 while the cost of enrolling for history is ksh 50 per
student. Determine the combination of the students in the two subjects that will give minimum cost

planting wheat and maize The labour cost of planting maize is KSh. 300 per hectare while it
costs KSh. 900 to plant a hectare of wheat. Maize The labour cost of planting me while wheat
takes 6 labourers per hectare. At least 72 labourers are to be hired and KSh. 15.000 is to be spent
for labour costs. The company hopes to make a profit of KSh. 2,000 per hectare of maize and
KSh. 4,500 per hectare of wheat. Let the number of hectares for maize be x and the number of
hectares for wheat be y.
(a) Write down inequalities representing the above information. (3marks)

(b) On the grid provided, draw the inequalities by shading unwanted regions (4marks)

(c) Use the graph to:-

(i) Determine the number of hectares of maize and wheat that should be prepared in order for the
company to maximize profit

(ii) Calculate the maximum profit

14. A theatre has seating capacity of 250 people. The charges are shs. 100 for ordinary seat and shs
160 for special seat it cost shs 16000 to stage a show and the theatre must make a profit. There
are never more than 200 ordinary seats and for a show to take place, at least 50 ordinary seats
must be occupied; the number of special seats is always less than twice the number of ordinary
seats.

(a) Taking X to be number of ordinary seats and y to be the number of special seats, write down all the
inequalities representing the above information (2 marks)

(b) On the grid provided, draw a graph to show the inequalities in (a) above (4marks)

(c) Determine the number of seats of each type that should be booked in order to maximize the profit

15. Mr. Joses has two lorries A and B used to transport atleast 42 tonnes of potatoes to the market.
Lorry A carries 4 tonnes of potatoes per trip while lorry B carries 6 tonnes of potatoes per trip.
Lorry A uses 2 litres of fuel per trip while lorry 8 uses 4 litres of fuel per trip. The two lorries are
to use less than 32 litres of fuel. The number of trips made by lorry A should be less than the
number of trips made by lorry B. Lorry A should make more than 4 trips.

a) Taking X to represent the number of trips made by lorry A and Y to represent the number of trips
made by lorry B, write the inequalities to represent the above information. (4marks)

b) On the grid provided, draw the inequalities and shade the unwanted regions (4marks)

c) Use the graph drawn in (b) above to determine the number of trips made by lorry A and by lorry B to
deliver the greatest number of potatoes. (2marks)

16. The principal of Shinda secondary school placed an order for x-lockers and y-chairs with the
following conditions:
i) The number of chairs should be more than the number of lockers.
ii) The total number of lockers and chairs must not exceed 100.

iv) The cost of a locker is ksh. 2500 and that of a chair is ksh. 1000 and the headteacher has only
ksh. 1500 to spend on the two items.
