the printer. Both running and initial costs should be avoidable
 Range of capabilities-when choosing a printer consider one with more capabilities like duplex
printing, support wireless connection , support network setup and print various paper sizes
 Print speed is the number of pages a printer will be able to print per minutes. A fast printer
will print many pages per minute while a slower will print few pages per minutes therefore it is
important to choose a fast printer
 Quality of printout –incase the printout desired should be of high quality then one needs to
choose quality printers like the laser printer
Award 1 mark each max 4
3. Describe four ways employed by the operating system to protect its programs, data and information
 Passwords –the operating system employs the use of password to protect the programs such
that incase the password keyed in with the one saved do not match, then access will be denied
 Backup system-the operating system keeps copies of programs and data and save them in a
different location so that they can be accessed incase the original is lost
 Facial recognition –this is the use of human attribute to protect data and information. in case
there is a mismatch between the saved face and the one displayed access will be denied
 Voice recognition-the operating system use the human voice to protect the data and programs
as one needs to key in the voice for access to be granted

10737418240 characters ......... 1mark
(ii) Given that 16GB memory card was used to back up the data in the storage disk calculate the
remaining space in the memory card in megabytes
=16 *1024*1024 *1024 ........................... ½ mark
=17179869180-10737418240 ........................... ½ mark
6442450944 bytes
6144 megabytes ...............................1mark

6. Describe three main elements of the central Processing Unit

 Control unit-coordinates all the processing activities as well as input storage and output
operations
