v. Answer the questions in English.

SECTION A (40 MARKS)


Answer all the questions in this section
1. When two charges are placed adjacent to each other, a field pattern is developed. With the aid of a
diagram Illustrate a field pattern of two adjacent charges of opposite polarities.
[2 Marks]
2. Coulomb’s law applies to bodies that are electrically charged. State the Coulomb’s law and give its
expression. [2 Marks]
3. The amount of electric flux density produced by electric field strength depends upon the permittivity
of free space and relative permittivity. Two parallel plates having a potential difference of 200V
between them are spaced 0.8 mm apart:
i. Determine the electric field strength; [2 Marks]
ii. Determine the electric flux density when the dielectric between the plates is air;
[3 Marks]
iii. Determine the electric flux density when the dielectric between the plates is polythene of
relative permittivity 2.3. [2 marks]
4. A magnetizing force of 8000A/m is applied to a circular magnetic circuit of mean diameter 30 cm by
passing a current through a coil wound on the circuit. If the coil is uniformly wound around the
circuit and has 750 turns. Determine the current in the coil. [4 Marks]
5. Direction of force and magnetic field generated when current flows in a conductor can be
determined by applying various laws:
i. State the Fleming’s left-hand rule; [2 Marks]
ii. State the right-hand grip rule. [2 Marks]
6. When a resistor and an inductor are connected in parallel in a circuit, the current is in-phase with the
supply voltage. Draw a phasor diagram of an R-L parallel a.c circuit. [2 Marks]
7. A 30 μF capacitor is connected in parallel with an 80 resistor across a 240V, 50 Hz supply.
Calculate:
i. The current in each branch; [3 Marks]
ii. The supply current; [1 Mark]
iii. The circuit phase angle. [1 Mark]
8. Authorities supplying power normally uses tariffs which encourage consumers to operate at a
reasonably high-power factor. Outline the effect of high-power factor and how it can be improved.

9. Motor control by use of electric drives is required in large number of industrial and domestic
applications. Highlight three advantages of electric drives. [4 Marks]
10. Earthing is a connection to the general mass of earth by means of an earth electrode. State three reasons
for earthing. [3 Marks]
11. A generator is D.C machine that helps in conversion of energy from one form to another form as
required by the equipment. Explain a separately-excited generator with an aid of a diagram.

SECTION B: 60 MARKS
Answer any THREE questions from this section.
12. a) Equivalence capacitance in a circuit depends on whether the circuit has a series or a parallel
connection of capacitors.Show that for n parallel-connected capacitors, equivalent capacitance is
given by the equation;

b) Figure 1 shows a capacitor circuit. Determine the:
i) equivalent capacitance of the circuit; [3 Marks]
ii) voltage across QR; [3 Marks]
iii) charge on each capacitor. [3 Marks]

iv. A capacitor is charged with 10mC. If the energy stored is 1.2J.


Determine;
a. The voltage. [3 Marks]
b. The capacitance. [2 Marks]
13. (a) Absolute permeability and relative permeability of ferromagnetic materials affects the slope of a B-H
curve and varies with magnetic field strength. A coil of 300 turns is wound uniformly on a ring of non-
magnetic material. The ring has a mean circumference of 40 cm and a uniform cross-sectional area of 4
cm2. If the current in the coil is 5A, determine the ;
i. magnetic field strength; [2 Marks]

ii. flux density; [2 Marks]


iii. The total magnetic flux in the ring. [2 Marks]
b. A closed magnetic circuit of cast steel contains a 6 cm long path of cross-sectional area 1 cm2
and a 2 cm path of cross-sectional area 0.5 cm2. A coil of 200 turns is wound around the 6 cm
length of the circuit and a current of 0.4A flows. if the relative permeability of the cast steel is
750. Determine the flux density in the 2 cm path. [4 Marks]
c. The concept of magnetism and electromagnetism is applied in various instruments for their
operation. With the aid of a well labelled diagram, explain the principle of operation of a moving
coil-instrument. [10 Marks]
14. (a) An electrical circuit can be made up of a network with linear resistances and more than one
source of e.m.f supplying the circuit. Various theorems and laws can be applied in determination of
the branch currents. State the superposition theorem; [2 Marks]
b) Figure 2 shows a circuit containing two sources of e.m.f., each with their internal resistance.
Determine the current in each branch of the network by using the superposition theorem;

15.
a) Transmission and distribution of alternating voltages is achieved by use of transformers.
Draw a no-load phasor diagram of a practical transformer;

b) A single-phase, 50 Hz transformer has 25 primary turns and 300 secondary turns. The cross-
sectional area of the core is 300 cm2. When the primary winding is connected to a 250V
supply, determine:
i) The maximum value of the flux density in the core; [4 Marks]
ii) The voltage induced in the secondary winding. [3 Marks]
c) The power supplied to a three-phase induction motor is 32 kW and the stator losses are 1200
W. If the slip is 5 per cent, determine:
i. The rotor copper loss; [3 Marks]
ii. The mechanical power developed by the rotor; [3 Marks]
iii. The output power of the motor if friction and winding losses are 750 W; [3 Marks]
iv. The efficiency of the motor, neglecting rotor iron loss. [2 Marks]
