What if analysis

The document explains the process of What-If Analysis in spreadsheets, detailing three tools: Scenarios, Goal Seek, and Solver. It provides step-by-step instructions for creating scenarios, using goal seek to find input values for desired outputs, and employing the solver for equations with multiple variables. Examples are included to illustrate the application of each tool in calculating simple interest and academic goals.

INTRODUCTION

WHAT- IF ANALYSIS
It is the process of changing the values in the cell to see how
those will affect the outcome of formulas on the worksheet .
There are three types of What – if analysis tools :
 Scenarios
 Goal – seek
 Solver
SCENARIOS
A scenario is a what if analysis tool which help to build up a
model wherein the changes made in values are reflected in
the possible outcome, which is based on some formula using
these values.
STEPS for creating new scenario :
1.Open OpenOffice Calc
2.Enter Your Data
3.Select the Range of Cells
4.Click command TOOLS
5.Create a New Scenario:
6.Define the Scenario Values:
7.Apply the Scenario:
8.View Results

FOR EXAMPLE –
QUESTION- 1

Calculate the simple interest if the principal is

5000 , rate of the interest is 3% , and the time is 2
years. Also calculate the simple interest if principle
is 6000 and 8550.
1. Enter the values

2.
3.

4.
5. NOW, click the dropdown menu present there and change the values as presented above.

6. Repeat the entire process again and get diff results and can switch also.
GOAL SEEK
The goal seeking is also a what- if analysis tool that calculates
backward to obtain an input that would yield a given output.
Steps for goal seeking –
1.Prepare Your Spreadsheet
2.Select the Target Cell
3.From the menu at the top, click on Tools.
4.Then, select Goal Seek from the drop-down
menu.
5.Set the Goal Seek Parameters
6.Click OK.

FOR EXAMPLE -

QUESTION- 1

Calculate the simple interest if the principal is

5000 , rate of the interest is 3% , and the time is 2
years. Also calculate principle if the simple
interest is 4500.

1. Firstly prepare the spreadsheet.

6.
7.Now exactly with this process we can change
the values.
QUESTION -2
A student is planning about her goals for marks
she should attain in the forthcoming Semester 4
examination in order to achieve distinction (75%) .
Assuming that each exam is of 100 marks. Her
marks for previous semester were given .
Find out how many marks she should obtain to get
distinction.

5. Here with same process we will fill no. in

subjects which will give the same outcome.
SOLVER
SOLVER tool is more elaborate form of goal seek and it deals
with the equation with multiple unknown variables. Aim of
the solver is to find the maximum or minimum result from a
multiple unknown variable.
STEPS for the solver-
1. Prepare Your Spreadsheet
2. Enable Solver (If Not Already Enabled)
from the tools menu.
3. Open the Solver Dialog Box
4. Set the Solver Parameters like objective
cell, set objective, by changing cell.
5. After clicking Solve, Solver will display a
message indicating whether it found a
solution. If a solution exists, the values in the
changing cells will be updated.

FOR EXAMPLE-

QUESTION – 1
A student had obtained marks to get
distinction and not know 2 subjects marks .
Give the details about the not known marks .
