Circuit Building Lab

The document outlines a Circuit Building Lab where students use an online simulation to build various circuits with specified materials. It includes a grading rubric based on student responsibility, accuracy of observations, and completeness of follow-up questions. Additionally, it provides a procedure for testing components, building circuits, and analyzing the effects of adding bulbs in series and parallel configurations.

Materials
● 2 batteries (1 battery set)
● 3 light bulbs
● 8 insulated wires
● 1 switch

Procedure
1. Test your batteries, switches and light bulbs to make sure they work.

Batteries and light bulbs: Connect two batteries and one light bulb in a circuit. If the light bulb doesn’t turn on, there
are three possibilities:
1. The connections are poor → make sure wires are tightly clamped and touching the metal
connector

2. The battery is dead → Make sure battery is securely in holder, then try your other battery

3. The light bulb is burnt out → try one of the other bulbs

Report any broken equipment to your teacher and get a replacement if necessary.
2. Build the following circuits as described. Draw the circuit diagram and note your observations in the tables provided.

● Indicate the brightness of the light bulb using this scale:

● Summarize your observations and conclusions for each section in the analysis sections

Analysis:
1. What happens to the brightness of the bulbs as you add more bulbs in a series circuit?

Extra: add a switch to control one light bulb. What was a factor that was difficult about adding the switch?

Analysis:
1. What happens to the brightness of the bulbs as you add more bulbs in a parallel circuit?

2. Unscrew one of the bulbs in the parallel circuit. What happens to the other bulbs?

Most complex electric circuits contain a mix of series and parallel circuits. For example, your house is wired in parallel so
that you can control each light or outlet separately. However, there are several main control switches in the fuse box that
will shut off all the electric current to a room or floor in the house.

Challenge
Design a circuit so that one bulb is controlled by a switch while the two other bulbs are not and glow
continuously.
a. Draw a circuit diagram to show your design plan..
Build and test your circuit. Make changes to your circuit diagram if changes are necessary. Show Mrs. Valade
when you’re done!
