Direct data entry devices: unit 2.

2
Direct entry devices are used when a large volume of data is needed to be transferred in a
short period of time.
chip and pin readers. A smart card is a RAM chip. When put into a machine, data can be
inputted or edited on it. Unlike a magnetic stripe reader, this can hold up to 8000 characters,
barcode readers: A barcode reader works by directing a beam of light across the barcode and
measuring the amount and pattern of the light that is reflected.
magnetic stripe readers A magnetic stripe card can hold up to 60 characters storing them
magnetically. These characters are often put once the card is made so it is never edited. It is
read through machines which accurately reads its magnetism. It can be destroyed through
scratching, exposure to other magnetic fields and some spillages of liquid.
Radio frequency id reader. RFID tags are used for tracking systems. It uses radio technology to
identify items. It does this by transmitting radio waves which transmit data from the tag to
the reader. This information is then transmitted to a RFID computer program. Often used for
merchandise or tracking cars
Contactless card readers: uses RFID technology to be able to input data without the need for a
pin. (used in cards like QNB) it works when the card is a few cm away from the reader and a
radio frequency is read.

Advantages and disadvantages:

1. Barcode reader
Advantages disadvantages
Faster than typing Barcodes can be swapped on items
No need to include price details Expensive system
Accurate and more efficient Unreadable if damaged

2. Radio frequency id reader

Advantages Disadvantages
Can read biometric data Radio waves can be easily hacked
Can read and write data More expensive than barcodes
Can read objects at a distance Other tags signals can interfere
Can read many objects at once

3. Countless card reader

Advantages disadvantages
No need to remember pin Less secure due to the no pin
Transactions are encrypted Only small payments are allowed
4. Magnetic stripe reader
Advantages Disadvantages
Fast data entry Cannot be done at a distance
Does not become destroyed by liquids Stripe could become scratched
Accurate
Data held can be upgraded

5. Chip and pin readers

Advantages Disadvantages
More secure than stripe card readers Pin can easily been seen leading to fraud
and contactless card readers
Fraudulent machines can be used to copy
the details inputted

Part 2:
magnetic ink character reader: MICR is able to read characters written in a special ink. These
characters are then converted into a form so they can be understood by the computer. Eg:
bank cheques

Advantages disadvantages
Characters can be read even if written over More expensive that inputting data through
a keyboard
Data cannot be edited Limited number of characters
No need to manually input data (less errors)
Optical character reader: scans text from handwritten copies to an editable form. This can be
used and edited in a range of software’s and word processing.

Advantages Disadvantages
Fast method of data entry Cannot read handwriting
Less chance of errors Not as accurate as OMR and it Needs to be
checked for errors
Optical mark reader: used to read marks in pen or pencil which is then stored into the
computer’s memory. Uses of this can be multiple choice exams and surveys.

Advantages Disadvantages
More accurate than OCR Can only read shaded areas not texts nor
numbers
Fewer errors Forms have to be done accurately to prevent
wasting time of manually checking
Fast method of inputting data as no manual
data checking is needed.
