P&S Assignment-Ii

This case study investigates the impact of sleep duration on student performance, specifically comparing exam scores of students who sleep 7 hours or less to those who sleep more than 7 hours. Using a dataset of 500 students and a Z-test for means, the study finds that students who sleep more than 7 hours perform significantly better in exams. The results suggest that adequate sleep is crucial for academic success, recommending 7-8 hours of sleep for optimal learning.

CASE STUDY

CASE STUDY: IMPACT OF SLEEP DURATION ON STUDENT

PERFORMANCE

Introduction:
Sleep is crucial for learning, memory retention, and cognitive function. This study aims to
examine whether students who sleep more than 7 hours per night perform significantly better in
exams compared to those who sleep 7 hours or less. The dataset is sourced from Kaggle:
"Students Performance Dataset" (Kaggle Dataset).

Statement of the Problem:

The goal is to test whether there is a significant difference in average exam scores between
students who sleep 7 hours or less and those who sleep more than 7 hours using a Z-test for
means.

Dataset Description:
The dataset consists of 500 student records with the following attributes:

 Math Score

 Reading Score

 Writing Score

 Hours of Sleep per Night

Students are divided into two groups:

 Group A (≤ 7 hours of sleep per night)

 Group B (> 7 hours of sleep per night)

A random sample of n = 250 students from each group is used for hypothesis testing.

Hypothesis Formulation:
We define our null and alternative hypotheses as follows:
Null Hypothesis (H0): There is no significant difference in exam scores between students who
sleep ≤7 hours and those who sleep >7 hours.

H0 : μA = μB

Alternative Hypothesis (HA): Students who sleep more than 7 hours score significantly higher
on exams.

HA: μA ≠ μB
HA : μA < μB
Significance Level: α = 0.05

Descriptive Statistics:

Group Sample size Mean score(x) Standard deviation

Group A(<= 7 hrs) 250 68.5 11.3
Group B(<=7 hrs) 250 75.2 10.5

Z-Test for Means:

We use the Z-test for two independent sample means:

̅̅̅̅
𝑋𝐴 −𝑋̅̅̅̅
𝐵
𝑍=
𝜎2
𝐴 𝜎𝐵
2
√ +
𝑛𝐴 𝑛𝐵

Substituting the above values:

(75.2−68.5)
𝑍= 2 2
√(11.3) +(10.5)
250 250
6.7
𝑍= 127.69 110.25
√ + 250
250
6.7
𝑍=
√0.5108+0.4410
6.7
𝑍=
√0.9518
6.7
𝑍= = 6.87
0.9756
Critical Value & Decision:
At α = 0.05 (one-tailed test), the critical Z-value is 1.645.
Since Z = 6.87 > 1.645, we reject the null hypothesis.

Conclusion:
The test provides strong evidence that students who sleep more than 7 hours perform
significantly better in exams than those who sleep 7 hours or less. The difference is
statistically significant at α = 0.05.

Key Takeaways:
✅ Adequate sleep is associated with better academic performance.
✅ Students should aim for at least 7–8 hours of sleep to optimize learning and memory.
✅ Schools and universities should promote healthy sleep habits among students.
