Q1:

EcoCore PLC produces three kinds of USB drives— 8GB, 16GB, and 32GB. This year, the
company has 18 kg semiconductors, 24 hours and 36 kg plastic available to produce USB drives
this year. Producing each 8GB USB drive requires 2kg semiconductors, 2 labor hours, and 0.5 kg
plastic. A 16GB requires 0.25kg semiconductor, 3 labor hours and 0.75 kg plastic. A 32GB
requires 0.3kg semiconductor, 2 labor hours and 0.8kg plastic. The profit for a 16GB drive is
$7,500, the profit for a 16GB drive is $8,200, and the profit for a 32GB is $10,500.

• Formulate a linear programming model for this problem

Q2:

Max z = 90x1+125x2+45x3 + 65x4

St: 3x1+3x2+x3+x4<= 72

36x1+48x2+25x3+35x4<=1200

X1+x2<=500

X3+x4<=500

x1, x2, x3, x4 >=0

• Solving this problem using simplex method

Q3:

max z = 60x1+30x2+20x3

s.t: 8x1+ 6x2+ x3 <= 48

4x1+ 2x2+1.5x3 <= 20

2x1+1.5x2+0.5x3 < = 8

x2 < = 5

x1, x2, x3 > 0

• Solving this using simplex method

• write the dual form
• conduct sensitivity analysis

Q4:

The Tena Adam drug Company produces a drug from two ingredients. Each ingredient contains
the same three antibiotics, in different proportions. One gram of ingredient 1 contributes 3 units,
and 1 gram of ingredient 2 contributes 1 unit of antibiotic 1; the drug requires 6 units. At least 4
units of antibiotic 2 are required, and the ingredients each contribute 1 unit per gram. At least 12
units of antibiotic 3 are required; a gram of ingredient 1 contributes 2 units, and a gram of
ingredient 2 contributes 6 units. The cost for a gram of ingredient 1 is $80, and the cost for a gram
of ingredient 2 is $50. The company wants to formulate a linear programming model to determine
the number of grams of each ingredient that must go into the drug to meet the antibiotic
requirements at the minimum cost.

a. Formulate a linear programming model for this problem.

b. Solve this model by using simplex method.

Q5:

A transportation problem involves the following costs, supply, and demand:

To (cost)

From 1 2 3 4 Supply

1 $500 $750 $300 $450 12

2 650 800 400 600 17

3 400 700 500 550 11

Demand 10 10 10 10

1. Formulate a linear programming model

2. Solve this problem by using Northwest corner method, least cost method and VAM.
3. Check optimality using MoDi method.

Q6.

A plant has four operators to be assigned to four machines. The time (minutes) required by each
worker to produce a product on each machine is shown in the following table:

Machine (min.)

Operator A B C D

1 10 12 9 11

2 5 10 7 8

3 12 14 13 11

4 8 15 11 9

1. Determine the optimal assignment and compute total minimum time.

Q7.

The members of the Vistas Club are planning a month-long hiking and camping trip through the
Blue Ridge Mountains, from north Georgia to Virginia. There are a number of trails through the
mountains that connect at various campgrounds, crossings, and cabins. The following network
shows the different connecting trails and the distance of each connecting branch, in miles:

1. Determine the shortest path from node 1 in north Georgia to node 13 in Virginia and
indicate the total mileage of the trail.

Q8:

Given the following network, with activity times in weeks, determine the earliest and latest activity
times and the slack for each activity. Indicate the critical path and the project duration:
