Computer application in mining – Note1

 Hardware & Software

 The term hardware refers to the physical components of your computer such as the system unit,
mouse, keyboard, monitor etc.

 The software is the instructions that makes the computer work. Software is held either on your
computers hard disk, CD-ROM, DVD or on a diskette (floppy disk) and is loaded (i.e. copied) from
the disk into the computers RAM (Random Access Memory), as and when required.

 Types of Computers

◦ Mini and Mainframe Computers

◦ Personal Computers

 Hardware Components

 Input Devices

◦ A keyboard and mouse are the standard way to interact with the computer. Other
devices include joysticks and game pads used primarily for games.

1
 Output Devices

 The monitor (the screen) is how the computer sends information back to you. A printer is also
an output device.

 INPUT DEVICES

 The Mouse

 The Keyboard

Uses of Computer

 PC at Home
 Computers in Education Use passwords
 Office Applications
 Computers in Daily Life
 Create a Good Working Environment
 Frequent breaks away from the computer
 Appropriate positioning of screens, chairs and
 keyboards
 Provision of adequate lighting and ventilation.
 Health & Safety Precautions
 Make sure that cables are safely secured
 Make sure that power points are not overloaded

 Computers in mining.

 Mining is not any different and students need to keep improving their computer skills to
tackle duties like; mineral resource modeling, mine planning, scheduling and other
mining tasks in the future.

4
 Value of Backup

 Use passwords
 Understand the Importance of shutting
 down your computer properly
 Use a UPS (Un-interruptible Power Supply)

 Computer Virus

Viruses are small programs that hide themselves on your disks (both diskettes and your hard
disk).

IT applications

 Application of Information Technology in mining, allowed development of new methods for

open pit designing and underground mines, which is significantly different from traditional
methods.

 This methods can be called as the “modern methods of design and modeling”.

 The basic assumption for its application is that the adequate database of geological and mining
data, as well as the model of the deposit must be formed.

 Modern methods of design and modeling are based on the integration of IT with mining
activities.

Comparative review of methods of design and modeling

Computer application in surface mining

 Computer programs for defining and optimizing

◦ open pit mine contour,

◦ landfill and

◦ production planning,

These are the basis for process control in the open pit mines design

 There are currently many professional software packages, which include;

◦ the geology of the ore body

◦ economic evaluation of open pit mine,

◦ Transport communications and other technological processes.

 There is almost no surface mine where engineers do not use any of the computer programs to
assist in the implementation of specific project solutions.

Computer application in underground mining

 Computer programs for defining and optimizing

◦ Mine developments

◦ Underground mining method selection

◦ production planning, and scheduling

◦ Ventilation

◦ illumination

There are currently many professional software packages, which include;

◦ the geology of the ore body

◦ economic evaluation of underground mine,

◦ Rock support processes.

Computer programs for mining application

 General grouping programs based on the purpose

◦ Mine developments

◦ Underground mining method selection

◦ production planning, and scheduling

◦ Ventilation

◦ illumination

 general-purpose software packages: programs for modeling and design of mining deposits by
the means of surface and in underground mining,

 specialized software packages: programs for optimization of surface and/or underground

mining exploitation and analysis of the metallic and non-metallic minerals exploitation and

 specific application software packages, designed for the analysis of specific problems related to
the design of mines or the design of exploitation technology,

 for example: slope stability analysis, drilling and blasting, truck transportation, loading and
transport – This are the main operation units of mining.

9
General characteristics of software packages for mining application

 Recently, most of the software packages have evolved to carry out most of the functionality
required on an operation or project.

 The standard functionality carried out by these packages include

◦ Visualization
◦ Modeling
◦ Database Management
◦ Reserve Calculation
◦ Mine Design
◦ Mine Planning
◦ The development of mine planning software has gone through many changes in
hardware compatibility, software tools and users expectations.

 These changes have impacted on management decisions
