Key challenges

Rev. 9.11

Key challenges
Businesses are facing some important challenges in their IT
infrastructure that directly affect their ability to conduct and
grow their business, lower overall costs, and mitigate risk.
Virtualization
Virtualization will continue to be top of mind with
customers; however, as virtualization technologies are
deployed, additional management challenges can be
created, particularly in a production environment.
Customers must manage infrastructure and process
changes to best control an environment with both virtual
and physical servers.
Power & Cooling
Dealing with data center power and cooling challenges is
one of the key issues right now as customers manage the
high costs of energy. Customers often try to add more
servers into an existing data center; budget issues often
delay the building of new data centers.
Scalability and growth
As the business grows, customers must adapt the IT
infrastructure to meet those demands; however, most
customers must meet these challenges in the face of budget
reductions. Customers are often faced with producing
better results with existing resource levels.

ProLiant series overview

ProLiant customers, regardless of size, are looking for ways
to grow their business, lower support costs and downtime,
increase efficiency, and better utilize existing data center
resources.
They require industry-standard solutions that allow for
server expansion, high-end processing power, and remote
management.
Customers for these lines also have several important
differences, specific to their business needs.
ML servers
If space is not an issue, but internal expansion is, suggest a
tower ProLiant ML server. These servers are:
• Optimized for maximum internal system expansion
• Designed with flexibility to increase the number of
expansion slots and hard drives inside the server
chassis
• Designed with high-availability features to ensure
maximum uptime
• Designed for remote and branch office environments
• Used for all-inclusive server and storage solutions
The ProLiant ML line represents servers that have defined
ProLiant as the industry leader. HP continues to develop
products within this line, giving customers the servers they
need to run their businesses.

Rev. 9.11
BitSpyder - The Culture of Knowledge

HP Servers Learning Milestones for Partners Industry Standard Servers

Customers have shown great interest in this line,

particularly businesses with remote and branch office
sites. Most of these servers are offered in both tower and
rack models.
DL servers
If space is an issue, suggest a rack-mountable ProLiant DL
server. These servers are:
• Optimized for density, stacking many servers in a
rack
• Designed to include more embedded features per
unit of space
• Designed for external storage
• Designed as an excellent platform for Microsoft
clusters
The ProLiant DL line represents an excellent market
opportunity. HP invented the rack server and options
market, and offers a distinctive line of servers clearly
optimized for use in those environments. With the
increasing number of ISP (Internet Service Providers), ASP
(Active Server Pages), and server farm businesses, there
is significant potential to market the ProLiant DL line.
BL servers
If rapid deployment and serviceability of servers and
infrastructure is an issue, suggest an ultra- dense ProLiant
BL system. These systems are:
• Optimized for dynamic, space-constrained, scaled-
out environments.
• Designed to easily adapt to changing workloads.
• Used for industry-standard, fabric-based computing.
The ProLiant BL line is designed to help corporate
customers and service providers adapt to changing
market requirements, conserve limited human and
technology resources, maximize efficiencies, and rapidly
respond to their customers in a dynamic business climate.
These systems range from power-efficient single processor
blades to high-performance symmetric multiprocessing
(SMP) server blades. They are designed to simplify
scaled-out deployments and use the ProLiant Essentials
Rapid Deployment Pack for automated server deployment
and provisioning capabilities.

ProLiant generational information

With the speed of change and innovation in the ProLiant
product line, it is important to understand processor
generations available within each form factor, plus the
features and functions available in each generation.
The previous strategy was to increment the generation
number based on individual product lifecycles. For
example, when a product is added to the ProLiant server
portfolio, it was introduced as a Generation 1 (G1). With
subsequent major updates to processor technology, the
product was announced as a Generation 2 (G2).
HP now aligns both the ProLiant Intel Xeon and AMD
Opteron product generation numbers to describe a family
of technologies, rather than individual product lifecycle
steps. Any new product or generational update will
become a "Gx" instead of "G1", "G2", and "G3", to
align to the latest generation in the ProLiant portfolio.
For example, G5 is currently the highest generation in the
ProLiant server portfolio. The majority of G5 servers are
associated with technologies such as:
• Small form factor SAS and SATA hard drives
• iLO 2 and iLO 100 remote management
• Integrated multi-function networking
• Power Regulator and Power Meter
• Multi-function gigabit networking
• Fully-buffered DIMMs
• Systems Insight Display
