MATH 1009: BASIC MATHEMATICS FOR BUSINESS AND ECONOMICS

May 23, 2016 2:30 - 5:00 pm

Only approved calculators as announced by the Examinations Secretary can be used in this ex-
amination. It is candidates' responsibility to ensure that their calculator operates satisfactorily,
and candidates must record the name and type of the calculator used on the front page of the
examination script.

Answer all FIVE questions. Each question carries 20 marks.

Notes:

• You should give precise and adequate explanations to support your conclusions unless
otherwise specified by the question. Clarity of presentation of your argument counts. So
think carefully before you write.

• You must start each question on a new page. However do NOT start each part of a
question on a new page. You should write down the question number on the top right
hand corner of each page. Indicate clearly which part of a question you are answering.

• If your answer to a question spans over more than one page, you must indicate clearly on
each page (except the last) that the answer will continue on the subsequent page.

• If you do not otherwise specify, you are assumed to be answering the questions in order.
In particular, indicate on each question where your answer to the next question is if it
does not follow immediately. (For example you may write 'turn back 3 pages for Question
5' at the end of Question 4.)

• Whenever there is a blank page it will be assumed that all subsequent pages are also
blank If this is not true, indicate clearly on the page which you would otherwise leave
blank

1. In each multiple choice question below, some numbered choices are given and some are
correct (wordings like is and are do not indicate the singularity/plurality of the number
of correct choices). Answer the question by adding up the numbers of the correct choices.
In case all choices are wrong, answer 0. Explanation is not required.

In addition to putting the answers inside the answer book, remember to copy the answers
onto the front cover of the answer book in the format prescribed.

5. In 2010, John planned to buy a flat worth $1,000,000 at the beginning of 2016. Expecting
to borrow 90% from the bank, he would need to make a down payment of $100,000. To
achieve this goal, he joined an investment project at the beginning of 2011, in which he
was required to pay a fixed annual amount at the beginning of each year from 2011 to
2015 (inclusive), and could get back $100,000 at the end of 2015. The internal rate of
return (IRR) of the project was set at 8%. Then John immediately used the $100,000
return from the project as down payment of the flat as planned. The rest was borrowed
from the bank with monthly repayment for 15 years, at a monthly interest rate of 1%.;ier
* Gfii.

(a) For the investment project, find

(i) the amount John had to pay each year;

(ii) the rate of change of the annual payment with respect to a potential change to
the current IRR.

(b) For the loan, find

(i) the amount of monthly repayment;

(ii) the equivalent annualised percentage rate (APR).

(c) (i) What interest rate, if charged continuously, will be equivalent to the 1% monthly
interest rate?

(ii) At the rate in (i), how long will it take for a sum of money to double?
