Tutorial 1

The document outlines a tutorial on fluid mechanics, presenting several problems related to airflow, oil flow between plates, gravity-driven water flow in pipes, and pump sizing. Each problem requires calculations involving shear rates, velocity profiles, volume flow rates, Reynolds numbers, and pump specifications. The tutorial is part of the curriculum for the academic year 2024-2025 at Euromed University of Fes.

FLUID MECHANICS: Tutorial 1

Problem 1:

A- Let’s consider an airflow at 20 °C on a plate with a velocity distribution

- Calculate the shear rate at y=0.3 mm and y=0.6 mm if the viscosity
of the fluid is equal to 1.8 10-5 Ns/m2. With δ=6 mm and u=10 m/s.

B- The velocity profile in fully developed laminar flow in a

circular pipe of inner radius R = 2 cm, in m/s, is given by
u(r) = 4(1 - r2 /R2). Determine the average and maximum
velocities in the pipe and the volume flow rate.

Problem 2:

Engine oil at T = 60°C is forced to flow between two very large, stationary, parallel flat plates separated by a
thin gap height h = 3.60 mm. The plate dimensions are L = 1.25 m and W = 0.550 m. The outlet pressure is
atmospheric, and the inlet pressure is 1 atm gage pressure. Estimate the volume flow rate of oil. Also
calculate the Reynolds number of the oil flow, based on gap height h and average velocity V. Is the flow
laminar or turbulent?

Problem 3: Gravity-Driven Water Flow in a Pipe

Water at 10°C flows from a large reservoir to a smaller one through a 5-cm-diameter cast iron piping system,
as shown in the below Fig. Determine the elevation z1 for a flowrate of 6 L/s.

The density and dynamic viscosity of water at 10°C are 𝜌 = 999.7 kg/ m3 and 𝜇 = 1.307 × 10-3 kg/m·s. The
roughness of cast iron pipe is 𝜀 = 0.00026 m

Determine f, using Moody Chart and Coolebrook Equation (With a Matlab or Python code). Compare the
results!

Problem 3: Pump Sizing

We wish to fill a storage tank using a centrifugal pump that would deliver 50 m³/h through the following
circuit:
Upstream of the pump, 20 m of straight horizontal pipe with a diameter of 100 mm, made of stainless steel
with a roughness of 0.02 mm, connected directly to the lower part of the wall of the feed tank:
Sudden contraction (k = 0.5) & check valve (k = 0.5). The upper level of the feed tank is 2 m above the pump
axis.
Downstream, 35 m of identical pipe (same diameter, same roughness), including two elbows with a
coefficient k = 0.25. The liquid that exits in a horizontal jet 17 m above the upper level of the feed tank is
collected in the storage tank.
The pumped liquid has the following characteristics:
 Density of 1000 kg m⁻³
 Viscosity of 1.14 x 10⁻³ Pa s
 Vapor pressure of 5500 Pa
Among the three pumps for which you have characteristic curves, which one is suitable for your
needs? What will be the power supplied to the fluid and the power absorbed (efficiency = 62%)?
The required NPSH of the chosen pump being 0.4 bar, calculate the available NPSH and verify the
proper functioning of the pump."
