Analysing how healthy beliefs are related to healthy behaviors that are considered unhealthy

As mentioned in the question l will chose one model in the text book to write about, which is a Healthy belief
Model. There are many unhealthy behaviors such as smoking, lack of exercise ,eating habits and excessive
drinking with their relation to healthy beliefs .for one to understand this ,he needs to know the meaning of
healthy behaviors and the meaning of healthy beliefs ,that way he will then understand the relations of these
two.

Unhealthy behavior ,smoking and its relation to beliefs.

Based on my readings ,smoking is an unhealthy behavior that can be influenced by various beliefs ,for example
the cost involved in carrying out the behavior e.g stoping smoking is hard it will make me irritable or the
benefits involved in carrying out the behavior e.g stoping smoking will save me money .Smokers may
acknowledge that smoking is harmful to their healthy but find it hard to quit due to smoking addiction which
then needs professionals to help with rehabilitation .however,psycho-social influences like peer
pressure, stress coping mechanism and social norms can further impact these beliefs, understanding these
connections can aid in developing targeted interventions to promote healthier behaviors and encourage
individuals to progress towards the preparation of quitting smoking [4]

Unhealthy eating habits and its relation to healthy beliefs.

Eating behavior is a healthy behavior which is linked to healthy and illness for example poor diet is associated
with a range of health conditions including obesity, diabetes, coronary heart disease ,people with diabetes eat
certain food advised by the doctor which is good for their healthy ,but some of them end up eating whats not
recommended by the doctor ,due to lack or shortage of food .However,psycho-social factors contribute to
these behaviors ,social factors like peer pressure and cultural beliefs can influence one’s
belief system regarding food choices .Moreover, emotional influences such as stress or boredom may lead
individuals to rely on food comfort for solace.[13,14]

Excessive drinking behavior and its relation to health

Excessive drinking is an unhealthy behavior that can be influenced by various psycho-social factors .The stage
of change model suggests that individuals go through difference stages including contemplation thinking
about change,pre- contemplation not thinking about change, preparation starting to prepare for change, action
making changes, maintenance keeping changes and relapse going back to the old behavior .Someone who
believes in the importance of physical health may be more motivated to change their excessive drinking
habits. However psycho-social influences such as peer pressure, stress and cultural norms can also impact on
this behavior by challenging healthy beliefs and promoting alcohol consumption as a social or coping
mechanism.[16,17]

Unhealthy behavior lack of exercise and its relation to healthy beliefs.

Lack of exercise is an unhealthy behavior that can be influenced by various factors.individuals may hinder
belief that exercise is not beneficial to their healthy and at the end of the day they find it hard to exercise due
to their stage in the change process.[6,19] ,those in the pre contemplation stage may not perceive exercise as
essential to their lives ,leading them to avoid it altogether. However psycho-social influences such as social
norms ,lack of social support or law self efficacy can also hinder individuals from engaging in regular physical
activity.[7,20]

In conclusion l would say behavior is central to health and illness and can be predicted by people’s beliefs
using individual beliefs or models.
