Advanced Classification of Control Valves

1. Classification Based on Valve Body Type

1.1 Linear Motion Valves

- Globe valve: Precise control, high-pressure applications

- Gate valve: Not typically used for throttling, used for on-off service

- Diaphragm valve: For corrosive and slurry fluids

1.2 Rotary Motion Valves

- Ball valve: Quick operation, suitable for on-off control and moderate throttling

- Butterfly valve: Lightweight, low cost, used for large flow applications

- Plug valve: Good throttling performance, used in severe services

2. Classification Based on Flow Characteristic

- Linear: Flow is directly proportional to valve travel

- Equal percentage: Small valve openings produce small flow changes, large openings produce large

changes

- Quick opening: Rapid flow increase with minimal valve travel, used for on-off applications

3. Classification Based on Actuation Method

- Manual: Operated by handwheel or lever

- Pneumatic: Air pressure controls valve position; fast and widely used

- Electric: Electric motor drives valve actuator; precise positioning

- Hydraulic: High force output, used for large valves or special applications

4. Classification Based on Control Action

- On-Off Valves: Only fully open or fully closed

- Modulating Valves: Capable of adjusting to any position between fully open and fully closed for flow

regulation
Advanced Classification of Control Valves

5. Classification Based on Application and Service Conditions

5.1 High-Performance Applications

- Cryogenic service valves: Suitable for very low temperatures

- High-pressure valves: Designed to handle very high pressures

- Severe service valves: For erosive, corrosive, or cavitating services

5.2 Specialized Application Valves

- Sanitary valves: Used in food, beverage, and pharmaceutical industries

- Slurry valves: Designed to handle thick slurries and abrasive materials

6. Other Classification Aspects

- Single-seated vs. double-seated:

* Single-seated: tight shutoff

* Double-seated: better flow capacity but lower shutoff performance

- Cage-guided vs. stem-guided:

* Cage-guided: better stability, reduced noise and vibration

* Stem-guided: simpler construction, suitable for standard applications

Conclusion

Control valves can be classified in numerous ways depending on their design, actuation, flow characteristics,

and application. Selecting the appropriate type is crucial for achieving optimal control, efficiency, and

reliability in process industries.
