Narrative Report on Summer Academic Remedial Program

Reading is an important skill for all learners to master. However, knowing how to read is
not enough; reading comprehension is also a requirement. Through reading and reading
comprehension, students can better understand the lessons.
Rolando R. Andaya Sr. Memorial High School is a public school where selected students
in the junior and senior high school participate. These students have one or two failed subjects
from the previous school year. The Summer Academic Remedial Program (SARP) under the
Department of Education Memorandum No. 035, s. 2025. The school followed the in-person
learning delivery modality.
Every student, but one, enrolled in the Summer Academic Remediation Program
struggles in reading comprehension in the English language. Their comprehension of the Filipino
language is already on par with the other students.
There is one student (conditionally promoted to Grade 9) who’s still confused with the
letters – he cannot differentiate the letter M and the letter W, along with other similar-looking
letters; therefore, he has been taught on a one-on-one basis by one of the volunteer teachers. The
students were first assessed by having them read through letter flashcards, introducing the
phonics. If they passed that assessment, they were then tested by having them read a story book
in English and Filipino. After they read through the stories, they can choose which volunteer
teacher to approach to reiterate the story to them. The teacher asked questions to guide the
To enhance learners’ reading proficiency, the teachers employed various methods during
the program. Stated below are the materials used during the Summer Academic Remedial
Program:
Storybooks
Flash cards (vegetables, fruits, animals, sight words)
Worksheets
Laptop for visual learners
There were concerns observed regarding the students’ attendance, especially in the higher
years. The greatest number of students in attendance was ten learners, and eight of those learners
were in Grade 7.
