Chapter 1 – Sets
5. A and B are two sets such that : n(A – B) = 14 + x, n(B – A) = 3x and n(A ∩ B)
= x, draw a Venn diagram to illustrate information and if n(A) = n(B) then find
the value of x.

9. There are 20 students in a Chemistry class and 30 students in a Physics
class. Find the number of students who are either in Physics class or
Chemistry class in the following cases :
(i) Two classes meet at the same time.
(ii) The two classes meet at different hours and ten students are enrolled in
both the courses.
10. In a survey of 5,000 people in a town, 2,250 were listed as reading English
newspaper, 1,750 as reading Hindi newspaper and 875 were listed as reading
both Hindi as well as English. Find how many people do not read Hindi or
English newspaper. How many people read only English newspaper?
11. If A = {1, 2, 5}, B = {1, 2, 3, 4}, C = {5, 6, 2}, then verify that :
(i) A × (B ∩ C) = (A × B) ∩ (A × C)
(ii) (A – B) × C = (A × C) – (B × C).
12. In a group of 950 persons, 750 can speak Hindi and 460 can speak English,
find :
(i) How many can speak both Hindi and English?
(ii) How many can speak Hindi only?
(iii) How many can speak English only?
13. In a survey it was found that 21 persons liked product P1, 26 liked product P2
and 29 liked product P3. If 14 persons liked products P1 and P2; 12 persons
liked product P1 and P3; 14 persons liked product P2 and P3, and 8 liked all the
three products. Find how many liked only one product?
14. Classify the following pair of sets as ‘equal’ or ‘equivalent’ or “none of these”.
i) E = {x : x is a prime number less than 7} and F = {2, 3, 5}
ii) G = {1, 2, 3} and H = (x, y, y, z}.
iii) I = {x ∈ R : x3 – 6x2 + 11x – 6 = 0} and J = {x ∈ R : x2 – 2x + 1 = 0}
15. Two finite sets have m and n elements. The total number of subsets of the first
set is 56 more than the total number of subsets of the second set. Find the
values of m and n.
