Part 2 of 3: Vocabulary Definitions and Questions

1. Homeostasis: The balance our bodies maintain and need to survive

2. Why homeostasis important? Because it helps us survive.

3. Stimulus: Something that causes a response.

4. What types of stimulus are there? Give an example for each. Theres external stimuli, which senses

external pain, changes in temperature, etc. and theres internal stimuli, which senses things going on

inside your body.

5. Response: The result of stimulus

6. Give an example of a response for each type of stimulus. An example of an external response would be

if you touch something hot, you pull your hand away. An example of an internal response would be if you

were hungry, you would eat.

7. Sensor: Can sense stimuli

8. Give an example of a sensory organ in the human body. The skin.

9. Positive feedback: a posittive response to a stimulus.

10. What is an example of positive feedback in a body system? If you take medicine, you feel better.

11. Negative feedback: A non positive response to a stimulus

12. What is an example of negative feedback in a body system? When you’re cold, you shiver.

13. Chemical change: A process in which theres a chemical transformation in a substance

14. What is an example of a chemical change in a body system? Hormonal changes

15. Physical change: A change that doesn't change the chemical structure of something

16. What is an example of a physical change in a body system? Your hair growing longer

17. Toxin: a substance produced by plants and animals that's poisonous to humans

18. Bacteria: A single cell organism that sometimes get you sick

19. Virus: A miscroscopic organism that duplicates inside a living being and usually gets you sick.

20. Parasite: An organism that lives inside another organism and takes all it’s nutrients

Nervous System Endocrine System Word Bank

Brain, Spinal cords, nerves Glands, hormones Brain Glands Spinal Cord
Nerves Hormones

1. What is an example of how these systems work together to maintain homeostasis? The nervous system
controls the endocrine system, and the endocrine system produces hormones which helps the body
grow.

Circulatory System Respiratory System Word Bank

Heart, blood, arteries, Diaphragm, lungs, trachea, bronchi, Lungs Heart Blood Trachea
veins, capillaries alveoli, Arteries Bronchi Alveoli
Diaphragm Veins Capillaries

1. Explain how these two systems work together to maintain homeostasis? The circulatory system moves
oxygen and blood throughout the body, while the respiratory system exchanges carbon dioxide for
oxygen in the lungs.
2. Which body system makes new blood cells? The skeletal system makes new blood cells through the
bone marrow.

1. How do these two systems work together? The skeletal system is the structure of the body, and the
muscle system helps it move and protects the skeletal system
2. What is the difference between voluntary and involuntary? Voluntary means you have control over it,
while involuntary means you have no control.
