system works on the basis of non-physical punishments for crimes committed. We have done away with the barbaric practice of using physical pain or disfigurement as a punishment for other crimes in favour of a more enlightened system of reforming the offender in prison. What would happen if the suspect was later acquitted ? the process could not be reversed. When the death penalty was applied, many people were found to be innocent subsequent to their execution the same could happen here. Mandatory chemical castration interferes with a sex offenders fundamental right to procreate and the right to refuse medical treatment (Spalding, 1997).
Castration is not an effective means of preventing recidivism amongst sex offenders POINT The evidence suggests that sexual castration is not an effective treatment, for sex offenders are not always driven by hormonal urges. Ales Butala describes visiting the Czech Republic and coming across three cases in which sex offenders had committed serious sex-related crimes , including serial rape, after being surgically castrated (Johnston, 2009). Furthermore, the American Civil Liberties Union believes that determined sex offenders can, in all probability, reverse the effect with other drugs (Spalding, 1997). If the effects of castration are capable of being circumvented, there is no punitive or deterrent argument in the operation.
Castration reinforces the myth that sex crimes are motivated by sexual desire, not power POINT The objective of a penal system is to rehabilitate; the castration of sex offenders is one step away from the amputation of the hands of convicted pickpockets. As the ACLU argue, chemical castration does make sex offenders ready to face society, as would be potentially possible with committed and prolonged psychotherapy (Spalding, 1997). Furthermore, the application of castration indiscriminately risks needlessly targeting rapists who are not sadists and paedophiles, and for whom castration will have no positive punitive effect upon (Gawande, 1997).
Internet The quality of information online cannot always be relied upon POINT The Internet has become a major source of information for many people. However, online information has usually not gone through the same checks as newspaper articles, books or factual television programming. There is a higher risk that some of the facts or quotations from a particular source in an article are false. Whereas newspapers might lose customers if people find out they have been selling lies, a blog and other online content can be easily created and uploaded as well as just as quickly being deleted. If people base their opinions on the information they find online, they could well be basing their opinion on false information. Take for example the 2006 conspiracy film Loose Change which has had millions of views. A report from the thinktank Demos in a report titled Truth, Lies and the Internet: A Report into Young Peoples Digital Fluency (2011) state that the film contains a ...litnay of errors, misattributions, vague insinuations, subtle misquotes, and outright falsehoods... Since the Internet gives equal space to material of greatly varying quality, the degree to which the internet can been viewed as being a total force for good is drawn into question. If an informed society is an empowered society it therefore stands to reason that a misinformed society is disempowered society.
The Internet is a threat to privacy POINT Everyones privacy can be greatly harmed by the Internet. Some websites store information. Some ask us to fill in information which can be sold to other sites for commercial purposes. As the Internet gains more and more users the temptation for criminals to gain our private information becomes greater. Hackers can hide their true location when engaging in illegal activities online, so the likelihood of their being brought to justice is low. Whenever people post something online, it becomes almost impossible to erase, and with the proliferation of social networks posting personal information online is becoming second nature, this is a dangerous precedent. Take for example the posting of our locations online via geotagging, this for many is an action which doesnt take much consideration, however, to demonstrate the danger of this designer Barry Borsoom setup the website PleaseRobMe.com which would grab geocaching data and tell people when a persons house was potentially empty.(Hough, 2010) With the aid of the Internet then, we are symbolically sleepwalking into a big brother style existence, in an information age all data about ourselves is an important asset and one which needs defending. The infringement and degradation of our privacy as a side-result of the Internet should be of great concern, and it is potentially one of the most detrimental effects the Internet could have on society.
The Internet has allowed a large amount of criminal, offensive and discriminatory information to be easily accessed. POINT The ability for anyone to be able to publish anything online without barriers resulted in a large amount of information which could not only be incorrect but could also be criminal, offensive or discriminatory if it were available to the general public. This sort of information would not usually be widely published via offline channels, but with the advent of the Internet it is very easily accessible by anyone like never before, and this is a dangerous president. A cavalcade of propaganda from extremist groups such as religious zealots or Neo-Nazis for example can be accessed by anyone around the world. This is dangerous as vulnerable people could easily be taken in and exploited if the discovered this material. It is quite often found that lone-wolf terrorists, for example, have gotten their information and inspiration from the Internet. Garry Reid, deputy assistant secretary of Defense for Special Operations and Combating Terrorism in the USA states that Enabled by 21st-century technology, extremists have optimized the use of Internet chat rooms, Web sites and e-mail chains to spread their virulent messages and reach a global audience of potential recruits (Romm, T. 2010) But it is not only terrorists who are utilizing the Internet at a detriment to society. Various reports have linked a sharp rise in paedophilia with the growth of the Internet (Cowen, R. 2005. & Daily Mail 2011) as it is an easy and often anonymous way to share such material with the world. The ability for anyone to publish anything online could clearly do considerable harm to society, which would have otherwise been much less prevalent and easier to control and regulate
Internet ( Against ) The Internet has increased economic and creative prosperity in a leveled way POINT The Internet has brought greater prosperity, allowing not only established business more distribution channels over a wider geographical area but it has also allowed individuals through e-bay, for example, and small independent businesses to flourish. This has brought a lot more choice to ordinary people, and also driven down prices as people find it easier to compare different companies products. The main advantage to small businesses is that they can cheaply set up online and find a global market for their goods and services. By making it easier to work anywhere with an Internet connection, the internet has also allowed many more people to work from home and to share projects with co-workers across the whole world which has allowed for greater economic efficiencies. The Internet has also provided a cheap and wide-reaching platform for independent creative people to share and distribute their work. This is done via self-promotion similar to small business, in the form of digital portfolios and self-hosted blogs as well as sharing content more generally, take for example the vast array of independent movies gets regularly posted to video-hosting websites such as Vimeo. The Internet has given anyone creative equal footing by which to compete as everyone has the potential to reach the same global audience.
The power that the Internet gives to citizens is good for democracy POINT People often complain that their opinions are ultimately pointless as nothing will change. This trend can be demonstrated with the numbers of people going out to vote consistently falling, however with the rise of the Internet this trend could reverse. What the Internet has enabled is for everyone, in one way or another, to have the chance to truly have their voice heard. It has given them the ability to fully engage in topics that matter to them on a personal level. As this website and this very debate show, people can debate, share opinions, and start petitions in ways that were never truly available before. Not only is democracy being revived, it is also being demanded in countries that do not have democracy due to Internet access. This can be seen in what has been described as the Arab Spring, whereby the Internet was used as a tool to organize pro-democracy protest in a number of Middle-Eastern countries including Tunisia, Egypt and Syria, to name a but a few.(Sletan, 2011)
The Internet helps to bring communities and the world closer together. POINT
With the ability for anybody to easily and quickly share rich information online, via a whole host of tools, the Internet serves bring people together. Firstly take for example social networks. Friends can remain connected to each other when miles apart. People can maintain and even create friendships without the barrier of geography. Additionally, social networks have a capacity to distribute news in a timely and targeted manner, directed at the people whom it mostly concerns, that is far greater than that of traditional media cannot compete. Secondly there are many instances of hyper-local news communities springing up online in which people can truly engage in their community, and help improve it. This model can and is extended to bigger areas, helping to engage society for its greater good. For example Fillthathole.org.uk, provides a nationwide portal for U.K. citizens to report road potholes. Thirdly the Internet brings the world together by not only encouraging direct communication with people from other countries, but also by being able to share and distribute information in a way which traditional forms of communication could not do.
Parents vs teachers TEACHERS Teachers absolutely play a role - Most instances they're with the students more hours in a day and hours in a week than the students are with their own families. But I wouldn't say that they MOLD a child's personality; I would say that they can affect it. "Mold" sounds more like a permanent or embedded formation in personality. "Affect" seems more like it alters or shifts something that's already in place.
A teacher MODELS (shows - not tells) many different behaviors in the classroom. It's his/her ACTIONS that a student watches and learns from. Students learn by repetition, so they learn about kindness, understanding, patience, forgiveness, anger, frustration, etc. by what they see on a regular basis.
A teacher can't MAKE a child form or change a behavior trait by her own accord - molding. The child will (or will NOT) begin to form or change in his own personality by imitating the behaviors of the teacher. I would imagine that the more a child is attached to the teacher, the more chance there will be a change in behavior(s).
It gets very complicated when a child comes from a disfunctional or abusive home. If a child sees his parent drunk all the time, or experiences constant yelling and beating when the parent is angry, then he begins to form his personality in the same manner because that's all he sees and knows. But when the child goes to school and has a very nurturing, loving, and caring teacher who shows the student a lot of attention, the child begins to see that there are other (better) ways to act besides the ways his parent does.
I was taught in education classes that a child's personality is 80% formed by the age of 6, and the other 20% forms between the ages of 6 and 12. I'm not sure how exact that is but I think it's a pretty genuine fact. When it comes to refer to the shaping of one's personality we should firstly mention the fact that school plays an essential part, maybe more than the influence the family has. In order to confirm this statement we should consider the following arguments.
First of all, the personality of each individual begins to take form in the middle of the family and is closely connected to the education, the social status, religion or culture that the family offers. But from
an early age a child begins to socialize and he comes into contact with diferent children of his age and even older, who contribute to his shaping of personality. Therefore, a first place to socialize for a child is kindergarden where he comes to meet several children of diferent behaviours and with whom
Moreover, with the passing of years, a child becomes an adolescent , attending a highschool or a universiy, where he tries to belong to a group of friends and have the same concerns and hobbies as the ones in his group. He may try either to copy other friends' personalities as he considers them the best. Then, he may want to have the same clothes and the same sum of money his friends have even if his family cannot afford it. This is a way of trying to feel equal with the others around you even if it is more important to be special in your own and impose your own way of thinking, your ideals and an unique behaviour in society.
On the other hand, at school, teachers try to do their best in order to shape student's personalities by having special classes where they discuss several matters of social life. There are situations when during these classes students have the courage to open a conversation on subjects that they cannot talk at home because they don't have such a close relationship with their parents like: AIDS awareness, foster ecological thinking and environmentalism, drug issues, the latest developments in computers and technology or how to combat right-wing extremism and racism. Consequently, this helps adolescents to freely express their concerns and to know how to sustain their arguments in front of other people's points of view.
But one thing I would like to point out and to conclude with is the fact that, in my opinion, the latest generations have become much more independent and uppish in the sense that they do not listen to their parent's advice and talk irrespectful to teachers. What do they try to show with this behaviour? Maybe the fact that they try to get rid of the prejudices that characterize our society and have a more modern perspective of life.
PARENTS parents show their children how to live. In childhood, children can not face troubles and parents show them how to conquer problems. Parents keep away them from danger and warn them. Beside of these they support their children with no expectation. I can't imagine my life without support of my parents. I just remember when I was kid, I had a fight with my friend and my father forced me to apologize to him. Such behavior has showed itself today in my life. I've taught how to forgive and apologize easily. They show me that nothing is important than love.
Parents should know how to communicate with their children. Their children must trust on them and this is not possible without a friendly relationship. parents should share their thought with their children and allow them to decide in troubles. I share my problems with my parents and their experience help me to solve my problems in the best.
furthermore, One of the most important ages of any person is adolescence. In this period of life they need more support than other periods. parents should know their friends and be aware about their relationship and control their behavior as much as possible.
In conclusion, in everybody's life a lot of people are influenced but among them the role of parents is significant than others. They teach their children how to live and face problems. They support them and keep away from danger and they do all of this with no expectation. Parents are natural teachers. Unfortunately not all parents teach the right stuff, but doubtless, parents are the best person to teach their children. Although we have different teachers teaching resources in our lives, parents teach Scarcely a teacher can effect us in every single stage of our lives like parents . They taught teach us from the moment we arrived to life, they reinforced our learning from the school years, and they taught us the values that will shape later our lives.
As newborns,we almost completely depended on our parents. We learn different feeling from the way the relationship starts taking shape. We know who can comfort us because taking care of us parents teach us who we can trust in. In this stage, we are already affected by learning from our parents. We learn to express ourselves because we mimic the motion and expression of our parents. Also, we learn to talk because we imitate our parent's sounds. In fact, studies have support the important role that parents do speeding children's speech in contrast of caregivers who take care of children at early age. actually, study had shown the baby imitate not only the sound but intonaiton and rhythm of parents.
Later on life, children go to school to learn general stuff knowledge. At this stage, school's teachers play a crucial role in children's and adolescents lives. However, it is parent's job to the effect from parent was determinate, becasue they let us know the knowledge of life and taught us the basic values and attitudes which we cann't study form the lecture bookwe will carry throughout life. It is from very likely one obtain the the life long discipline, respect and moral values form home rather than school .
As adults, we are still learning from our parents. They shared their experice with us and give insightful advice are still having have a good word to suggest or advice us. Moreover, at this stage we realized and make conclusions about what they have thought brought us, which was positive and which was suitable negativefrom our learning, which was our parents tried to teach us and we skept or didn't pay attention. Therefore, we can use all this knowledge and experience to rise up our children. Raising my children, I will have repeate a lot of right things I have learned from my parents, while, I will rejecte to things that I learned from them but not right or do not accommodate to the present time.
I think that parents are incomparable to be their children's teacher. Throughout different stages of our lives we learned from them in a very natural way. They teach us how to live from the very start, as newborns, thoughtout our lives. Moreover, I believe that most of the time, without conscience, we act just repeating or rejecting what we have learned from them.
