Assignment 2

This document outlines an assignment for first-year mechanical engineering students at Cairo University, focusing on stress analysis involving bending, shear, torsion, and combined loading. It includes four questions that require calculations of reactions, stress, torque, and the design of mechanical components under specified loads and conditions. The assignment emphasizes practical applications of mechanical design principles and the analysis of forces and stresses in various structures.

Assignment 2
Bending & Transverse shear - Torsion - Combined loading

Question (1)
The arm ABC of an industrial robot is supporting a load 200 N at C. The arm ABC has a uniform
distributed mass 30 kg/ m, and pin connected at A and
connected to a hydraulic cylinder BD in the stationary
position shown in the Figure. It is required to:
i) Calculate the reactions at pins A and B.
ii) Draw the normal, shear and bending moment
diagrams for arm ABC, and illustrate the values at
the ends and supports.
iii) If arm ABC has a T-cross section shown in the figure,
calculate maximum normal stress at the critical
section.
iv) Calculate the maximum transverse shear stress at the critical section.

Question (2)
The hollow shaft AC is made of aluminum with inner
diameter of 60 mm and outer diameter of 80 mm. The
shaft is fixed to the wall through rigid flanges at A and
C; and carrying a torque of 8 kN.m at B. The rigid
flange at A is fixed to the wall by (n) bolts, each bolt
has diameter of 8 mm. The bolts are made of steel and
distributed on a circle with diameter of 150 mm. The
modulus of rigidity (G) of aluminum and steel are 27
GPa and 75 GPa, respectively. It is required to
determine:

a) The reactions at the supports A and C.

b) The maximum shear stress developed in the shaft AC.
c) The angle of twist at section B.
d) The number of bolts ( n) required to fix the flange at A to the wall, if the maximum allowable
shear stress in the bolt is 120 MPa.

Question (3)
The motor M delivers 10 kW to gear A at rotating speed
of 4000 rpm. The solid shaft EF has diameter (d) and
supported by two smooth bearings at E and F, as shown
in the figure. Gear A has 50 mm diameter and gear B has
175 mm diameter. The torque at gear C (TC = 55 N.m),
while the torque at gear D is (TD). If the shaft EF is
made of steel with modulus of rigidity (G) = 75 GPa,
allowable shear stress (allow) = 120 MPa and maximum
allowable angle of twist of 0.05 rad;
a) Calculate the torque at gear B.
b) Determine the torque at gear D (TD).
c) Draw the twisting moment diagram for the shaft EF.
d) Determine the required minimum diameter (d) of the shaft EF
to satisfy both strength and rigidity considerations.

Question (4)

A 30 mm diameter rod is subjected to two forces 450 N and 300

N as shown in the figure. It is required to determine :

a) The value of the internal reactions at the section a-a.

b) The state of stress at points A and B at section a-a and show
these stresses on an element located at these points.
