NARRATOR:
One late afternoon, two siblings continued working in the rice fields despite
the scorching heat of the sun. They were Fabian and Vidal. As they worked
side by side, Vidal couldn't help but steal glances at Fabian. He was amazed
at how effortlessly Fabian handled the farm work moving with skill and
precision, as if he had been doing it his whole life. It was almost
unbelievable. While most people would take three days to finish the same
tasks, Fabian powered through them in just one, never seeming to tire.
“Harvest is almost over, Vidal. Soon, it will be planting season. We’ll need
more carabaos. Milia’s father has five. Ask her, and she will accept you. Why
are you waiting?”
(Footsteps approach. A woman’s voice, deep but smooth, breaks the silence.)
NARRATOR : Fabian tensed at the sound of her voice. He kept working, but he
could feel her presence close—too close. When she gestured, her silk dress
brushed against him, and her perfume lingered in the air.
MISS FRANCIA: “From now on, he must work for me every morning, maybe
all day.”
NARRATOR: (As the sun sets, the brothers walk side by side, the quiet
between them heavy. Suddenly, Vidal notices a large moth fluttering nearby.
He reaches out to touch it, but Fabian strikes it down with his bundle of rice
stalks.)
FABIAN: “If the dust from a moth’s wings gets in your eyes, you’ll go blind.”
“Beautiful things have a way of hurting. I destroy them before they can hurt
me.”
NARRATOR:
Fabian’s home is simple. Tinay rocks their baby, while their daughter Trining
plays in the corner. Supper is on the table, but Tinay stays with the baby.
Fabian sat down, but his mind wasn’t on the food. Miss Francia’s face kept
appearing in his thoughts—the way her perfume clung to the air, the way she
had looked at his arms.
(Vidal stretches, watching his little niece play. He catches a pebble she
throws and teases her.)
VIDAL: “What a pretty girl you’ll be, Trining! Such fair skin, deep eyes… oh! A
mole on your lips. That means you’ll talk a lot!”
(Vidal clenches his fists in silent anger but says nothing. That night, he
sleeps deeply until dawn, when he wakes to the sound of Trining sobbing as
her curls fall to the floor.)
(Vidal avoids his brother, spending more time at Miss Francia’s home, where
she molds sculptures in the shaded patio.)
NARRATOR:
She shaped many figures—men of clay, of stone—but they all had Vidal’s
face.
VIDAL: “She’s leaving in two days… and she wants me to go with her. She’ll
pay me more than I can ever earn here. She’ll help me find a future.”
NARRATOR:
(Fabian finds Miss Francia sculpting a figure of a reaper, pausing to wipe the
sweat from his brow. It is Vidal immortalized in stone.)
(He struggles to find the words but manages to tell her Vidal cannot leave.)
MISS FRANCIA (amused): “To marry the girl whose father has five carabaos?
Vidal told me.”
FABIAN (pauses, then lies): “My brother… has wronged this girl. There will
be a child.”
(Miss Francia’s face falls. She looks away, her voice barely a whisper.)
MISS FRANCIA: “The arms are not finished. Would you pose for me, just for a
moment?”
NARRATOR:
Fabian steps forward. As she shapes the clay, his strength seems to drain
into it. For the first time, he realizes—he has crushed beauty his whole life
because he never understood it.
SCENE 6:
Narrator: Fabian returns home. Vidal sits outside, holding a crumpled twenty-
peso bill, his face pale.
NARRATOR :
Fabian had won. But as he looked at his brother’s defeated posture, he felt
guilty.
(Fabian stands outside their modest home, carrying a small bag. Tinay, their
children, and Vidal watch as he prepares to leave.)
FABIAN: (smiles, ) Yes, Tinay. This is for our future. Not just for me, but for all
of us.
FABIAN: (to Vidal) Thank you for the opportunity you were willing to give me.
Don’t worry, I’ll come back as soon as I can.
(Fabian waves goodbye and leaves as Tinay watches, tears brimming in her
eyes.)
