ICT 4 Basic Input Output Devices

Input and output devices are crucial for user interaction with computers, where input devices like keyboards and mice send data to the computer, while output devices like monitors and printers display processed information. Some devices, such as touch screens, can function as both input and output devices. External storage and network devices also play roles in data input and output, facilitating tasks like saving and retrieving files.

Basic Input and Output Devices

Introduction
In the world of computers, input and output devices are essential components that allow
users to interact with a computer. Input devices help us send data to the computer, while
output devices display or convey the processed information back to the user.

Input Devices
Input devices are hardware components used to provide data and control signals to a
computer. These devices act as a bridge between the user and the computer.

Keyboard
Definition: A keyboard is the most commonly used input device for entering text, numbers,
and commands into a computer.

Example: Typing a document in MS Word using a keyboard.

Mouse
Definition: A pointing device that detects two-dimensional motion and translates it to the
screen's cursor.

Example: Clicking on icons or dragging files.

Scanner
Definition: A device that converts physical documents or images into digital format.

Example: Scanning a paper to save as a PDF file.

Microphone
Definition: A device that captures audio input for communication or recording.

Example: Recording a podcast or using voice commands.

Camera (Webcam)
Definition: A device used to capture live images and videos.

Example: Video calling via Zoom.

Joystick/Gamepad
Definition: A device used for controlling games by translating physical movement into
signals.

Example: Playing video games on a console or computer.

Touch Screen
Definition: A display screen that also acts as an input device by detecting touch gestures.
Example: Operating a smartphone.

Output Devices
Output devices display or produce the results of the computer's processed data.

Monitor
Definition: The most commonly used output device, it displays information visually.

Example: Watching a movie on a computer screen.

Printer
Definition: A device that transfers digital data to physical media, like paper.

Example: Printing a school project or office document.

Speakers
Definition: Devices that output audio signals from the computer.

Example: Listening to music or watching a movie with sound.

Headphones
Definition: Personal audio output devices worn over or in the ears.

Example: Participating in an online class.

Projector
Definition: A device that projects visuals from a computer onto a large screen or wall.

Example: Displaying slides during a presentation.

Plotter
Definition: An advanced printing device used for printing large-scale graphics, such as maps
or blueprints.

Example: Architects using plotters for design printing.

Braille Display
Definition: An output device for visually impaired users that provides information in Braille.

Example: Reading text in Braille format.

Input/Output Devices
Some devices can function as both input and output devices.

Touch Screen
Input Example: Typing using an on-screen keyboard.

Output Example: Displaying text or graphics.

External Storage Devices
Input Example: Saving files to a USB drive.

Output Example: Retrieving and viewing files stored on the USB drive.

Network Devices
Input Example: Sending data over the internet.

Output Example: Receiving emails or downloading files.

Real-Life Example
Imagine you are working on a project:
- Input Devices: Use the keyboard to type, mouse to navigate, and a scanner to digitize
documents.
- Output Devices: Use the monitor to view your work and a printer to create a hard copy.
