How to Check if a website is Secure

When you use the internet, you should always make

sure the website you are visiting is safe. A secure
website protects your personal information like your
name, password, or email. If a website is not secure,
someone could try to steal your information.
Here are some Steps that you need to do.

1. Check the Website Address (URL)

Look at the top of your screen where the website
address appears. A secure website starts with https://
and not http://.
The "s" in https stands for secure. It means the
information you send or receive on that website is
protected.
Examples:
 Secure: https://www.example.com
 Not secure: http://www.example.com
If the website does not have "https", do not enter any
personal information on it.

2. Look for the Padlock Icon

Next to the website address, you should see a small
padlock symbol in most browsers. This means the
website is using a safe connection.
 If you see the padlock, it is safe to use.
 If you see a warning like “Not Secure”, or there is
no padlock, then the website might not be safe.

3. Pay Attention to Warnings from Your Browser

Sometimes, your internet browser (like Chrome, Safari,
or Edge) will warn you if a website is not safe. It might
show a message like:
 “Your connection is not private”
 “This site may be dangerous”
If you see a warning like this, do not continue to the
site. It is better to close the tab and leave the website.

4. Check If the Website Looks Trustworthy

A safe website usually looks professional and well-
made. If a website:
 Has lots of spelling or grammar mistakes
 Shows strange pop-up ads
 Asks for private information for no reason
 Looks fake or poorly made
Then it may not be secure. Always be careful.

Optional Advice
If you are not sure whether a website is secure, ask an
adult, teacher, or parent for help. It is always better
to be safe than to risk using an unsafe website

What is Encryption?
Encryption is a special way of hiding information so
that only the right people can read it.
Imagine you want to send a secret message to your
friend. If you write it in plain English, anyone who sees
it can read it. But if you use a secret code, only your
friend (who knows the code) can understand it.
This is what encryption does — it changes the
information into a secret code when it is sent from
your device to the website.

Why is Encryption Important?

Without encryption, hackers or strangers could:
 Read your private messages
 Steal your password
 Take your email, phone number, or even money if
you're shopping online
With encryption, even if someone tries to "listen in"
while your data is being sent, all they see is a bunch of
meaningless numbers and letters. They can’t read it
without the special code (called a key).

How Does It Work on a Website?

1. When you visit a secure website (https), your
computer and the website agree on a secret key.
2. Any information you type (like passwords or
messages) is encrypted using that key.
3. The website then decrypts it (turns it back into
normal text) using the same key.
4. This way, only you and the website can read the
information.

Example:
Let’s say you are logging into your email:
 You type your username and password.
 The website encrypts that information.
 It travels safely through the internet in a secret
code.
 The website gets the code and decrypts it to
check your login.
If anyone tries to steal the information on the way, they
will just see a confusing message like:
89fh$3@12bd&**#gk – not your real password!

Summary:
Encryption is like using a secret code to protect your
data while it travels through the internet. That’s why
it’s so important to only use secure websites that
use encryption — they help keep your private
information safe and hidden from hackers.
