Recipe for Success
Serving Suggestions: For a rigorous viewing of I, Robot (2004), students will complete a viewing
log that includes both cinematic and literary analysis questions.
Serves: Whole Class and Groups/Independent
Ingredients: (Print or Digital)
• I, Robot (2004) DVD or Digital Access
• I, Robot Viewing Log and Quiz (Print or Digital)
• Science Fiction—Slideshow, Note-Taking Guide, Notes Quiz
Procedures: (for printed copies)
1. Background: Science Fiction Film Genre
1. Introduce students to the Sci-Fi Film Genre using the slideshow.
2. Students should complete the note-taking guide while you present the slideshow.
(Alternately, a copy of the notes is included to distribute to students with special needs
and to those who are absent.)
3. You can administer a multiple-choice quiz on the notes. The Google Forms™ Version is
linked on the contents page and at the bottom of the Quiz-Page 1. A Google Docs™
Version is linked on the bottom of the Quiz-Page 2. You can import these questions into
the Google Forms™ Quiz for the movie if you want to combine them.
4. For viewing additional Science Fiction films, a chart for listing common themes, motifs,
and elements can be completed in Google Slides and can be used with any film.
2. Distribute the film viewing log (digital or print copies).
3. Have students review the viewing log questions prior to viewing. Answer any questions
students have about the terms or content. You may wish to review unfamiliar terms with
students; many are necessary to answer some of the viewing questions. If you need support
for the technical questions about film, see my Film Facts lesson or Mise-En-Scene and
Camera Work (forthcoming as of publication).
4. Show the film in 15-20-minute increments or with breaks if included in the viewing log. Pause
the film and give students ample time to respond and catch up, as needed.
5. Give students time to complete the questions before going over their answers or collecting for a
grade. An answer key with suggested responses is included. Many possible responses may be
“correct.”
6. Direct students to look for science fiction themes and motifs in film clips on television,
streaming, or YouTube for independent work or homework.
7. For assessment, a quiz is provided. The quiz is a 25 multiple-choice assessment. The Google
Forms™ Version is linked on the contents page and at the bottom of the Quiz. A Google
Docs™ Version is linked on the bottom of the Quiz-Answer Key.
