1. INTRODUCTION

In the ever-evolving world of computers, understanding basic input and output hardware
is essential. This research explores three key areas: special keys on a keyboard, the mouse
and its functionalities, and the different types of ports used to connect peripherals. These
components play a vital role in user interaction and system communication.

2. KEYBOARD SPECIAL KEYS AND THEIR FUNCTIONS

Keyboards are essential input devices with various keys for different functions. Below
are some special keys commonly found on a keyboard:
● Ctrl (Control): Used in combination with other keys to perform shortcuts and
commands.
● Alt (Alternate): Used to change the function of other pressed keys.
● Shift: Used to type capital letters or access the upper character on a key.
● Enter: Executes a command or starts a new line in a document.
● Esc (Escape): Cancels an operation or exits from a dialog box.
● Backspace: Deletes the character to the left of the cursor.
● Delete: Removes the selected item or text to the right of the cursor.
● Tab: Moves the cursor to the next tab stop or field.
● Function Keys (F1–F12): Perform specific tasks depending on the software being
used (e.g., F1 is often Help).
● Caps Lock: Toggles capital letter typing.
● Num Lock: Enables or disables the numeric keypad.

3. MOUSE AND ITS FUNCTIONS

The mouse is a hand-held pointing device used to interact with a computer system.
MOUSE is sometimes humorously said to mean 'Manually Operated User Selection
Equipment'. It allows the user to point, click, drag, and drop items on the screen.
Functions of a Mouse:
● Pointing and selecting items.
● Clicking to execute commands (left-click, right-click).
● Dragging items across the screen.
● Scrolling through documents using the scroll wheel.
● Opening context menus using right-click.

4. TYPES OF PORTS AND THEIR FUNCTIONS

Ports are physical docking points using which external devices can be connected to the
computer. They serve as an interface between the computer and peripheral devices.
● USB (Universal Serial Bus): Connects devices like flash drives, printers, and
external hard drives.
● HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface): Transfers high-definition video
and audio to displays.
● Ethernet Port: Connects a computer to a network or the internet via a cable.
● VGA (Video Graphics Array): Used to connect older monitors and projectors.
● Audio Jack: Connects headphones, speakers, and microphones.
● PS/2 Port: Used for connecting older keyboards and mice.
● Thunderbolt/USB-C: High-speed data transfer, power delivery, and video output.

5. CONCLUSION
Understanding the functions of keyboard keys, the mouse, and various ports is crucial for
effective computer use. These components form the foundation of user interaction with
computer systems, and knowledge about them enhances productivity and ease of access.

In addition, with the rapid growth of digital services, there is an increasing need for
innovative technological solutions—such as website development, application design,
and digital platforms—to support and enhance service delivery in both public and private
sectors, which all begins by understanding the essentials and fundamentals of computer/s.
