File organisation

FILES
• Files can be created by various programs and are stored in different
formats. Files can be identified by an icon that is unique to the
software used to create the file.
• Examples of files
File types & file extensions

• file type refers to the software that is used to create/open a file. A file extension is automatically
added to a file when we create and save the file.
FILE NAMES

• File names are the name you give a file when you save it. Use short
descriptive words to create a file name. File names usually consists of
three parts:
 The name of the file when you save/create the file.
 To separate the file name and the file extension.
 File extension
FILE PATH
• A file path refers to the location where a file is saved on your
computer, i.e., the way to get to the
• file.
Converting file types

• Converting a file type means changing the existing file type into a format that others can access.
This
• feature especially comes in handy when we want to:
• • use an older version of the software, or
• • when we want to share data so that others can view the file if
• they do not have the software;
• To convert a file, we can go to the Save As option and change the
• type of file so that it opens in the selected format.
FOLDERS

• Folders can contain a collection of subfolders and files that are


organised in the file explorer. Creating folders helps us to keep our
files in a logical sequence and manage our system.
